A Story About Risk Managment
"Red" might the most photographed chicken in the history of mankind. 😅 He was hatched an only chick, an orphan. His batch of eggs traveled 2,100 miles in January of 2023, and most likely most of the embryos were frozen, or the USPS truck jostled them too much...no way to know. Shipping fertilized eggs over a long distance is sketchy, especially in very cold months; it's a calculated risk and it took us two batches of eggs to get the now rare DNA here to the Pacific Northwest.
Being brutally honest, it was also possible our hatching room and incubators failed to hatch the eggs...we realized our hatching environment was not world class, nor were our incubators (the incubators had cost as much as the eggs). Clearly we could have no impact on the handling of the eggs until they were in our hands, but we could go to every length to ensure once we had them they were treated perfectly.
After the single hatched egg happened we built a dedicated incubation room, and brought in the world's best incubators...this boosted our results and we now have a small flock that has grown up, is laying fertilized eggs to be hatched. We have established a small flock of "America's Chicken" here in the Pacific Northwest.
It's hard to imagine the Heritage Rhode Island Red, a 125 year old genetic line, could be endangered! However, due to commercial practices in poultry over the last 50+ years, (moving away from the ancient Dual Purpose chicken to specialized chickens), there were none like this in Washington, Oregon, Idaho or British Columbia.
The takeaway here from an engineering perspective is this: Considering an process to be a like a relay race where each team hands off their work product (the baton) to the next team...there's often not much that can be done until your team gets the baton, so carefully prepare yourself to do your best when you get the baton.
