As work to clear the wreckage of the MV Dali that collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore has started, we look at how this tragic incident has severely restricted activity within the port. By combining VesselTracker’s AIS, Ship and Port data, we can show there has been a significant reduction in both the number of vessels entering the port and the volume of cargo being transported. Compared to the same period in 2023, the number of cargo-carrying vessels entering Baltimore between 26th March and 4th April 2024 has reduced from 72 to 9 representing a reduction of DWT from 3,240,511 to 211,239. Today marks the 28th anniversary of the tragic ValuJet DC-9 crash on May 11, 1996. The flight, headed to Atlanta, caught fire after departing Miami, leading to a devastating crash in the Florida Everglades, claiming the lives of all 105 passengers and 5 crew members. The incident was caused by incorrectly labeled and improperly packed hazardous oxygen generating canisters. Following this tragedy, the Department of Transportation promptly enforced a ban on these canisters to prevent future disasters.
