Justin Bieber reportedly earned ₹80 crore for his hour-long performance at Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant's sangeet in Mumbai last week. However, what caught the desi internet's attention wasn't just his stellar performance but his choice of wardrobe. Sporting a white vest, black baseball cap, and black low-waist bicycle shorts, Bieber's attire stood in stark contrast to the extravagant designer outfits and lavish jewellery worn by the guests. As an HR professional and observer of human behaviour, I see this incident through a different lens. Bieber's wardrobe choice wasn't about the money he earned; it was a bold statement about authenticity and self-expression. Despite the grandeur of the event, he chose to be himself, emphasising that his value lies in his talent, not in his attire. This situation highlights a cultural bias we often see in our society. We tend to equate a person's worth with their external appearances—the clothes they wear, the house they live in, and the vehicle they drive. This bias can cloud our judgement and prevent us from appreciating the true essence of an individual—their skills, talents, and unique personality. Imagine if an Indian artist had shown up in a similar outfit. Would they have been given the same stage? It's unlikely. Our societal expectations would probably not have allowed them the freedom to perform. This reflects a deeper issue where we often prioritise appearances over substance.
