I have a journalism degree and was taught that without freedom of the press, we have no democracy. Like it or not, long form (and for the fruit fly attention spans - short form) video + podcast from engaging, unfiltered, opinionated thinkers is the future - not media, not journalism. It will be biased. It will be polarizing. The best we can do? Teach children how to be critical thinkers. Teach children how to be kind. Teach children how to handle conflict and have difficult conversations. Teach children how to value all humans. Where do we have a playbook for this? Finland. It can be done.

Eighteen weeks in and it feels like we’re only just starting to hit our stride. Feedback’s been great and we’ve already made positive changes to what we offer. So if you checked out The QT way back when we launched in February then it’s well worth having a fresh look. For starters our team of trusted freelancers - you’ll recognise many of the region’s foremost voices - is bigger, stronger and more diverse. What they have to say really is worth reading. We’ve delivered in-depth coverage on the mayoral elections, social care, prisons, education and more and continue to shine a light on the big players and emerging stars of North East business. There’s no better place to catch up with everything that’s happening on the arts and entertainment scene - Sam Wonfor and David Whetstone have long been the region’s culture tastemakers and continue to set the agenda. And our team of storytellers is second to none. We’re determined to keep informative, long-form journalism alive. Let us know what we’re doing right, what we’re doing wrong and what could be better. #northeast #news #business #culture #storytelling #journalism #politics #theqt
The QT is a weekly online news and features magazine. It is independent, politically-neutral but North East biased. Subscribing to The QT is an investment in quality regional journalism. There are no obtrusive ads, pop-ups or clickbait headlines. Just quality stories told by quality storytellers.

This is the best journalism, along with the NY SUN, in that business today. There is no spin, propaganda, or lies. Real game-changing research is the facts. Look where it has led: to a historic injunction against censoring First Amendment free speech by this current administration, never before envisioned but warned of by our founders. Free speech was first on the Bill of Rights; it is more powerful than any man-made weapon.

Yes. Here are four thoughts based on my experience funding journalism sustainability initiatives at Facebook and coaching them at Blue Engine Collaborative: 1. This is what the American Journalism Project does to great effect. They’ve proven that this works. Others should follow their lead and extend their playbook. 2. The availability of media business education is so low in our space (Table Stakes, cuny exec ed, and Sulzberger are basically it) … but where do you go to become a marketing leader or an audience director? I’ll wait. I’m reminded of a Rasmus Kleis Nielsen Nieman column where he pointed out the global media industry spends less on professional development than the global furniture industry. If you don’t train your people, they won’t grow. 3. Existing programs could pivot to do this. Report for America could literally do this! The return on investment is much clearer to the funder and to the host organization. 4. Most important: investing in your business team is not optional. Too often, we see “the business side” as a necessary evil to create journalism rather than a full partner. As Steven Waldman has just written, better funding products (loans) would make this easier. But it must be done. We are ready to work with anybody ready to do it.
Local journalism has a business problem -- not an editorial talent problem. Where's the News Revenue Corps program? Report for America, but for the business side of things.

ICYMI, Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness covered how much of our news consumption these days comes from social media and cable news, but whatever happened to local newspapers? Along with Journalist, author, and educator Meg Heckan, they discussed the history of newspapers, how communities are impacted when their local paper folds, what we can do to cultivate a stronger news ecosystem that’s more reflective of our society, and how this all impacts democracy. It's a good listen! https://lnkd.in/e9r5YrFZ
