The RRC Polytech Inspire Conference is an opportunity for industry and students to network, promote technology and innovation, and be inspired! The conference allows students to gain an understanding of a variety of career paths before graduation and provides industry the opportunity to meet the next generation of talent. At the Work-Integrated Learning and Career Services booth, we used JP Michel's Challenge Cards to INSPIRE students and get them thinking about how they might apply what they are learning in school, to tackle some of the world's biggest challenges. And let me tell you - our booth was busy! Some things I noticed about engaging students this way: 🧠 It got students thinking about career paths in a brand new way ❤ It connected personal values with a sense of purpose 🗣 It equipped students with new language to talk about career interests 💪 It motivated them to learn more about industries, employers, and roles 💥 It broke big questions down into manageable discussion points If you are looking for a fun, engaging, and meaningful way to talk about careers, this is certainly worth a look! #careers #careerdevelopment #jobsearch

🎉 Reflecting on the Success of Career Compass Event! 🚀 Cheers to an incredibly enriching event, "Career Compass," which flourished with abundant educational insights and career guidance! 🌟 As part of the IEEE Educational Week celebrations spanning from April 14th to April 20th, the SEC IEEE Educational Society orchestrated a remarkable career guidance program on April 16th at Sri Sairam Engineering College. It was heartening to witness students from both SEC and SIT actively participating and engaging in the session with full vigor and enthusiasm. 🎓 The session offered comprehensive guidance on a variety of professional possibilities, including higher education overseas and alternative tests such as IES, UPSC, and banking. It also covered entrepreneurship and its advantages and pitfalls. 💼 The event was a lively debate, with students exchanging ideas and viewpoints. The active engagement between presenters and learners created an environment for mutual learning and growth. 🗣️ The program provided attendees with clear career advice and essential information to help them manage their professional careers effectively. I am incredibly proud of the #growth and achievements of my students in Building Career Confidence and Connections unit, especially as they delivered their final presentations based on informational interviews. It’s been inspiring to witness students from #diversedisciplines come together, collaborate, and apply their learning to real-world career contexts. This semester, the top three presentations stood out for: ⭐Delivering #powerfulmessages of learning and career planning. ⭐Utilising a multidisciplinary approach to uncover #untappedopportunities and connections. ⭐Demonstrating the true value of research in rationalising #careerdecisions and expanding #professionalnetworks. Reflection: 🎯 From enhancing their communication and teamwork skills to mastering the art of networking and refining digital career profiles, the #WILdesignedcurriculum has truly set them up for success in their future careers. 🎯 The confidence they’ve gained through #practicalexercises, #sitevisit and #selfreflection will undoubtedly help them navigate their professional journeys with poise. A big thank you to my Swinburne University of Technology students for embracing this learning experience, and to my wonderful colleagues, Geoffrey Guilfoyle and Rosie Nelson, for their unwavering support. In recent years, there has been an escalating pressure, perhaps best perceived as a catalyst for learners within Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to enhance their capabilities through a myriad of avenues such as certification programs, internships, workshops, seminars, expert lectures, and an array of other opportunities. Indeed, one might ponder, "What isn't included?" in this comprehensive approach. This surge in emphasis is palpable, with organisations across the spectrum vigorously promoting these avenues. Consider, for instance, the provisioning of a specific technology to students from various platforms: expert-led sessions, faculty instruction, online repositories, peer interactions, and a plethora of other resources. Yet, more often than not, our evaluation culminates in mere numerical assessments. The pivotal question emerges: Do these efforts truly cultivate mastery of the technology, equipping learners to meet industry benchmarks? This, I posit, is the quintessential query confronting all HEIs. Moreover, it's imperative to acknowledge that the recipients of these educational endeavors remain constant. Hence, there's an exigency to discern the necessity-driven, skill-centric training regimen that resonates with all stakeholders within the academic ecosystem. Prioritizing quality over quantity becomes paramount. These reflections, offered for your discernment, underscore the need for a paradigm shift towards a holistic educational approach. Deep skilling is the need of the hour and that we need to realise to make educational framework more stable, robust and mightier than ever enabling the students to be near-industry ready. Connections may drop their views that can benefit several other connections. Research shows that internships strongly influence a recent graduate’s decision on where to work and live. Michigan is proactively working to ensure college students and recent grads see a long-term future in the Great Lakes State. One way we’re doing this is through the STEAM Ahead internship program, lead by MEDC's Talent Solution team. The STEAM Ahead program builds connections between skilled young people and high-tech employers by supporting paid work experience opportunities. The program matches 1:1 up to $4,000 in wages for a full-time intern and up to $2,000 for a part-time intern in a STEM/STEAM role (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) at a Michigan employer. The wage match provides an easy way for all sizes and types of businesses anywhere in Michigan to take on an intern, deliver real-world, hands-on job experience and gain access to a future full-time employee, all while gaining high value work from skilled "emerging talent" — a win-win for everyone. And if you are a employer that hasn't considered an intern program - know that there is tremendous value in connecting with this age group of potential employees - they are uber-technology-focused, will bring new and valuable insights to your organization, and provide great ideas into how your organization can grow with an expanded age demographic for your workforce. Companies need to complete a simple, one-time application and receive MEDC approval to join STEAM Ahead. Once approved, the company submits its intern(s) for each semester (summer, fall, spring). Employers are reimbursed for intern wages by MEDC, per intern, per semester.
