Another looming trade war. This article I wrote more than six years ago still holds true. Material cost is just one of the factors that will impact your supply chain. The real cost will be the increase in uncertainty and volatility. Read the article to learn more. Most companies are already struggling with too much inventory, remnants of bad practices from the COVID era. So increasing inventory buffers to respond to this challenge will only add red ink to the books. Better planning will help, but not by much. There is only so much you can anticipate. Enterprises have to strengthen their responsiveness, but without a knee-jerk reaction that adds to volatility. Technology (including AI) can help (along with people and process). But it requires enterprise leaders to focus on provable business value instead of chasing the next shiny thing. I see signs that this mindset shift is happening and it will only accelerate. #bullwhip #vuca #tradewar #tariffs #supplychain #decisionintelligence

Logistics for fun and giggles. 😁 Transportation falls under logistics and logistics falls under supply chain. It is NOT Supply Chain vs Logistics. 😉 New import tariffs 💸 or more of the existing tariffs? Is this a blow 👊to China or to the American people? Who is paying the tariffs, the seller or the consumer? 👨🔧 🤔 Why were companies interested in manufacturing in China in the first place? I’m sure you guess it, Cost $$. For many years 📅 , companies were interested in China because people were benefiting from cost while companies from ROI. It seems now that people are no longer interested in cost and trades, but more interested in political ideologies. Do we think that buying the same steel, batteries or minerals from other countries will help our economy? I really don’t know but I hope so. While transportation 🚚 has been affected and some people may argue that the transportation industry is in some sort of recession, the supply chain operations could end up in a worse place. As any Bullwhip Effect 📉 , a minor fluctuation in demand at the end of the supply chain can result in a rapid transition affecting inventories, cost, orders, and economy. By watching 👀 some of the trends in recent supply chain operations, we can observe how many companies and/or countries are heavily investing at a very fast rate on new supply chain strategies by focusing on sustainability and AI technology. While sustainability has been the most common trend 🚀 and most topic discussed, AI technology is raising fast to the same level as sustainability changing how companies pivot and manage their operations through advanced supply chain risk management. In today’s business, those in supply chain management role have been responsible for spearheading a sustainable plan while keeping the cost down avoiding business loss and consumer dissatisfaction. 😏

International trade flows have changed a lot over the last few years. Major companies are restructuring their supply chains and diversifying sourcing and distribution strategies to reduce costs and hedge against disruptions. About 20% of manufacturing exports has moved out of China to countries like Mexico, India, Vietnam, Malaysia and Poland. This is a market dynamic that impacts all companies … all supply chains of note … all carriers … and all modes of logistics and distribution. This is where UPS stands out from the competition. UPS's Supply Chain Symphony can orchestrate an end-to-end supply chain like no one else can, wrapping the physical with the digital. It’s a huge advantage for our customers. Although inflation rates are continuing to fall and global trade is gaining momentum, moderate growth is expected for the road freight market in the second half of the year. Here are the latest forecasts by industry experts: 🌍 Despite falling inflation rates and stabilising fuel prices, freight rates are expected to remain high due to increased energy and insurance costs and new truck toll rates in Germany. 📦 Ongoing shortages in cargo space are likely to persist, as some carriers have reduced their fleets due to economic concerns. 🚚 Road freight volumes are expected to increase in the second half of 2024, although ongoing geopolitical tensions in Europe and supply chain disruptions due to the war in Ukraine could impact market stability and freight rates. The increase in imports from Mexico compared to China indicates a shift in global trade patterns and highlights the growing importance of cross-border logistics. As this trend continues, it's likely that challenges such as: * Increased demand for transportation and logistics services * Congestion at border crossings and ports * Complexity in navigating customs regulations and compliance * Pressure to maintain efficient supply chains * Need for accurate tracking and visibility * Equipment capacity will arise. However, with the right strategies, infrastructure, and technological advancements, these challenges can be overcome, and the growth of cross-border logistics can be sustained. It's an exciting time for the industry, and I'm eager to see how it evolves!
