"You should just turn off the news if you're so upset by Pa|3stine that you can't work." I'm not sure how I contained my rage when I heard this. Statements like this remind me why it's so important to decolonize our western standards for mental care. In the last week, I've woken up to videos of char*red babies, a father crying over his star*ving kid and other unimaginable horr0rs in G*za, yet this statement implies that somehow I'm weak for not being able to stomach a gen0c|de. I've heard the US president talk about antisem!tism with regards to peaceful protests, seen our justice system give bail to a woman who tried to drown a Pa|estinian family, yet it's my fault for being upset. Statements like the one that I heard, is incredibly demoralizing and damaging, because it: 👉🏾 Puts capita|ism's value of "working" above all else, including humanity 👉🏾 Promotes racism, wh|te suprema*cy, Islamoph0bia by suggesting that the lives that are being lost are not important enough for attention 👉🏾 Practices individualistic care over community care by encouraging me to place my needs above a gen0c!de 👉🏾 Upholds systems of oppress!on's favorite tactic of ignorance and looking away 👉🏾 Gaslights me into thinking I'm the problem What can we do instead? 💡 Don't norma|ze vio|ence and gen0C!de. Acknowledge the horrors that's happening and how its a stain for our collective humanity. Example: "I know the news has been devastating coming out of Ga*za." 💡 Instead of prioritizing work, make space for the grief and allow them the time or care they need at the moment. Example: "Would it help to take the day off from work?" 💡 Practice community care by finding resources that can help those affected. Example: "I saw some resources to donate funds to families on the ground. Would you like to look through them together to see what we can do?" 💡 Dismantle systems of oppress!on's by sharing news and spreading awareness. Example: "Did you see Bisan's video today that..." 💡 Last but not least, don't gaslight people into thinking something is wrong with them. Our souls were not meant to witness such bruta|ity and vio|ence. Example: "Of course, you're not okay. None of what's happening is okay." What are other statements you've heard related to this?
