Whether it's 10 years or 20, AI systems will completely dominate music - Billy Corgan, The Smashing Pumpkins The things we've talked about involve a deeply emotional, intuitive process that takes time. It's an exploration of self - - Billy Corgan, The Smashing Pumpkins Jimmy Chamberlin, my brother, playing at a level right now, insane, almost beyond my comprehension. To watch him as a musician, father, friend, go through that deeply emotional process of learning, recommitting, bringing new things to the table…. No AI system will ever trump that journey - Billy Corgan, The Smashing Pumpkins Clip from 'The Smashing Pumpkins: The Billy Corgan Interview', Rick Beato's YouTube, Dec 13, 2022 - https://lnkd.in/gy_c3Gdv -------------------------------------------- With all the chatter about AI-generated stories, photos, essays, and such, how timely Rick Beato posted another fantastic interview with Billy Corgan from The Smashing Pumpkins, where these two very talented musicians, address the issue head-on. And while the impact of AI is acknowledged, once again, the art is in the journey and the process, not the output. AI will get you an output, but it's not the same emotional journey, pain, learning, and growth adventure as working through the creative process. I just started reading 'The Turing Guide' and only 26 pages in, this quote from Turing caught my eye, more topical in 2022 than the date mentioned, 1952 'I do not see why it should not enter any one of the fields normally covered by the human intellect, and eventually, compete on equal terms. I do not think you can even draw a line about sonnets, though the comparison is perhaps a little bit unfair because a sonnet written by a machine will be better appreciated by another machine' - Alan Turning, Manchester 1952 per The Turing Guide, Oxford Press, 2017, Page 26 https://lnkd.in/ggWaRvAZ Another fantastic interview Rick More amazing interviews here - https://lnkd.in/gy_c3Gdv #ai #music #art #creator #musicians #interview #growth #learning #creative #chatgpt #chatbots #bots #write #captioned #machines #instruments #ml #data #creativity #youtube #media #leadership #thesmashingpumpkins #whatmakesthissonggreat #rickbeato #billycorgan #turing #sonnet
I was only able to get 20 minutes into this interview. A whole hour and a half with them was crazy. Can't believe it turned to AI.
"No AI system will ever trump that journey." - I couldn't agree more! AI is merely a tool. It undoubtedly can enhance and improve the final output of musicians and other creatives, but the organic journey through art can never be replaced.
I wanted to refute Billy's statement. However, I recently recorded an original song in my home studio. Using a virtual Pearl set that worked with my song, I utilized EZDrummer 3's drum editors to create a drum pattern. With some manipulation, the drums sounded as close to natural as they could get and were indistinguishable to the ears of multiple musician friends who heard the song. I'm hoping that music becomes more collaborative between AI and human authorship. What would've taken months for me to write was reduced to days. If AI unlocks human creativity, I'm all for it!
