The dilemma of the day: which is better, working on commercial or private jets as cabin crew? 🤔 Here are 5 main differences between the two to help make up your mind! 1. Schedules. Unlike commercial aircraft crews, private ones have no schedule or roster, and the work is very much on demand. This means that you have to be way more flexible. 2. Salary. Due to extra responsibilities, private jet flight attendants’ salaries tend to be higher than average compared to commercial crew. However, it depends on the operator and other factors, such as rotation or how often you fly. 🛫 3. Duties. Private jet cabin crews have a lot more work to do outside the actual flights. It might include ordering the catering, restocking supplies, cleaning the aircraft after each flight, and more. 4. Teams. If you decide to fly commercially, you’ll always have a team of cabin crew to support you if needed. In the case of private jets, the size of the team depends on the aircraft, duration of flight, and the number of passengers on board. However, many private flights only require one flight attendant, which means you’ll often work by yourself. 5. Aircraft. Flight attendants on private jets usually work on just one or two planes, so they get to know them really well, whereas airline cabin crew might only fly on the same plane a few times in their entire career. Starting your journey as a cabin crew comes with the excitement of exploring not only new skies but also base cities. 🏙️ Understanding how these bases are chosen is crucial. Here's a simple breakdown: 1. Assignment in training Once you have accepted a job offer, you go through the airline's training, which can range from three to six weeks. During training, cabin crew learn safety protocols, practice emergency drills, and get familiar with aircraft equipment. This is also where you’ll be assigned your base. 2. Preference process You’ll have the chance to rank your preferred cities, however, airlines usually allocate bases based on seniority. More experienced team members are more likely to secure their top choices. 3. Living in your base city While it's encouraged for new flight attendants to reside in their assigned base city, few airlines require this. Commuting is a viable option, allowing flight attendants to live elsewhere and travel to their base when needed. 🌐 4. Commuting & flexibility When commuting, you can choose to spend your working nights in hotels or temporary apartments, providing a balance between work and personal life. 5. Home-based opportunities Today, some airlines offer the option of a home base. This provides cabin crew with the unique opportunity to work from the comfort of their home city, eliminating the need for regular commuting. Their work is dynamic, requiring excellent communication, quick thinking, and a strong customer service mindset. Key Responsibilities of Cabin Crew: 1. Passenger Safety: Above all, safety is the top priority. Cabin crew conduct pre-flight safety checks, ensure passengers follow safety regulations, and are trained to handle emergencies like medical situations or evacuations. 2. Many people view the role as a dream job because you get paid to travel the world, take photos, enjoy amazing food, and attend lots of parties. However, much like a beautiful car, what truly makes a difference is what's under the hood—whether it be the engine, the spare parts, or all the little nuts and bolts. This is exactly what many people fail to research when they apply for a cabin crew position. It's statistically proven that the success rate for securing a cabin crew job is just 3% during the application and interview process within the aviation industry. Every day, I see many candidates scouring the internet for interview questions and trying to memorize the answers, missing the main point: it's not about the answer as much as how it’s delivered. Airlines, especially those in the GCC region, hire you for who you are and your character, not just for what you know. Once you join an airline, you will be trained or retrained if you were an ex-cabin crew member. The most important foundation is the human being reflected in their outlook and behavior, which is why only 3% make the cut. The outlook job or career with flight schooling is usually commercial aviation. Commercial aviation is either with the airlines, cargo-lines, or any other job requiring piloting for compensation. Right now in the US, and the rest of the world, there is a huge pilot shortage. This means that salaries have increased and companies are eager for new pilots. The average salary for a commercial pilot currently is about $150,000-$200,000/year. The job is awesome, however is requires some sacrifice and dedication. A lot of pilots are away from family for an extended amount of time and their shifts can be any time on the 24 hour clock. But there are many perks such as free travel and getting to see the world, high pay that increases with seniority, free hotels and meals, and only having to work 14 days a month on average. “The rotation is 17/4 but the flight is only 1hr30” But what you also need to consider is 1. Taxi to the airport from your home 2. Airport time getting through security (baring in mind flight could be delayed) 3. Flight time 4. More airport time (waiting for your luggage & going through passport control) 5. The drive to site from the airport (the location of the project might be a 2/3 hour drive from the airport) Is the travel day part of the rotation days? Do you get paid for the travel day? Make sure the travel is doable otherwise you will feel worn out after a couple of months & leave. There’s a lot to consider when accepting work - do the due-diligence & don’t be afraid to ask the questions. And if they tell you that the travel is part of commuting to work - tell them to do one 💩.
