The Dover Strategy Group team (and family members) had a great time this weekend at a rally for our candidate Kina Collins, with a live concert featuring the Strokes, Beach Bunny, and NNAMDI! The music was incredible - and so was seeing so many #IL07 Democratic voters getting energized to vote in next Tuesday's primary!
Let us not forget those who have paved the way for our freedoms. A small history lesson in how long these groups have had voting rights:
-White Men: Forever.
-White Women: 104 years
1920: The 19th Amendment granted women the right to vote after decades of advocacy, particularly through the women's suffrage movement.
-Black Men: 154 years (More realistically approx. 80 years)
1870: The 15th Amendment gave Black men the right to vote, although discriminatory practices like literacy tests and poll taxes continued to disenfranchise many for nearly a century.
-Black Women: 104 years (But effectively around 59 years)
1920: The 19th Amendment included Black women, but widespread voter suppression, particularly in the South, meant it wasn't until the Voting Rights Act of 1965 that they were able to vote without discriminatory barriers.
-Native Americans: 100 years (More accurately around 75 years)
1924: The Indian Citizenship Act granted Native Americans U.S. citizenship, including the right to vote, though many states continued to prevent them from voting until the 1950s.
-Hispanic/Latino Americans: Varies, but many gained full access around 59 years ago
1965: The Voting Rights Act helped Hispanic Americans overcome barriers such as language discrimination, especially for non-English speakers.
-Asian Americans: 70 years
1952: The McCarran-Walter Act lifted the last major barriers to citizenship and voting rights for Asian Americans, following years of exclusion laws that prevented them from naturalizing and voting.

I am beyond thrilled to announce that I have taken on the position of Senior Director, Investor Experience for Unite America - a nonpartisan organization dedicated to reforming our democracy. We find ourselves at a critical juncture in the history of our nation. Daily we are seeing the results of a broken election system. Constant gridlock. Political in-fighting. Overall dysfunction in Congress and across our local and state governments.
What is at the heart of the issue? Our election systems. While elections may seem like a niche concern - technical and at times confusing - they are also an opportunity to make immediate, impactful change on our society. Currently, with our closed primary system, only 8% of voters in the United States effectively decide who holds 83% of the seats in Congress. This system incentivizes wins for extremist candidates who speak only for the small minority of their base most motivated to show up on primary day. And millions of Independent and third party voters are disenfranchised from participating in primary elections, where in “safe districts” the true election takes place.
And yet, things do not have to be this way. There are straight-forward and timely reforms we the people have the power to pass, which can make an immediate difference in how we select candidates, who ends up on the ballot, and how much each of our votes count. We can move toward a more functional and engaged government, one that truly represents the interests of our communities and works on behalf of the people. And with extremist groups on the rise, and increasing political polarization threatening our institutions, we do not have the luxury to stand idly by and watch our democracy fail us and future generations. Now is the time for action, and I cannot wait to roll up my sleeves and get to work.
Interested in learning more? An incredible overview of the #PrimaryProblem and potential solutions has been captured in the documentary film "Majority Rules" (preview linked below). Directed by the award-winning AJ Schnack and produced by Unite America’s Executive Director, Nick Troiano, it follows the historic 2022 Alaska election which implemented ranked choice voting and open primaries for the first time. I highly recommend giving it a watch, and if you are motivated to get involved, let me know!
