This month's nonprofit spotlight is Peacemaker. I got to sit down with Ricky Beauchamp and learn about the ways this organization can help, and also hear about the impact they've already made. Here's what we discussed: Q. What is one thing you want our community to know about this organization? A. They are a nonprofit that exists to benefit children's organizations. Q. How many were you able to help in 2023? A. The amounts vary by year depending on fundraising proceeds. Cumulatively in the past 9 years, they have donated $850,000 to several organizations. Their core 4 are Girls Inc, Development Wings, Children's Emergency Shelter, and the Boys & Girls Club in addition to other organizations. Q. What brought you to this organization? A. 10 years ago Ricky was approached by a client who dreamt of a nonprofit music festival. It would be a community asset, an economic driver for downtown Fort Smith, and benefit children's organizations. The rest is history. Q. What big events do you have coming up in 2024? A. Their 10th Annual Peacemaker Music Festival will take place on October 11th and 12th. Tickets can be purchased at https://lnkd.in/gCMDF6Ys Q. How can we help? A. The goal is to reach $1M in proceed donations to celebrate their 10th year anniversary! They are looking for corporate sponsorships as well as ticket sales and festival attendees.

As nonprofit professionals, we're always seeking innovative ways to engage donors. But have you considered cabaret? Cabaret blends music and storytelling, creating an intimate experience that resonates deeply to anyone in your community. It's not just entertainment—it's a strategic tool for emotional connection. Why it works: 🗣Personal storytelling drives emotional investment 🤯 Unique experiences stand out in donors' minds 🎤 An intimate setting fosters community "I've never attended a cabaret before and was amazed at how much I enjoyed it," a school superintendent shared after an event. How are you incorporating storytelling in your fundraising? Have you explored the performing arts through music or spoken word? We'd love to hear your experiences. Let's innovate in fundraising together! #Fundraising #NPONeeds

Gary Slaight gives the straight goods to Toronto Life Magazine. "There are a lot of people in Toronto with a lot of money—and a lot of them don’t give much. I won’t name names, but there are folks who need to be doing much more." We need more Gary Slaights. And more Slaight Musics. This aligns with one of the policy recommendations from our Reimagining Music Venues study: establishing a new charitable foundation - the Ontario Space for Music Foundation - to unlock more private philanthropic donations, alongside increased public funding, to revitalize the underfunded live music sector and allow for more innovation and experimentation. https://lnkd.in/gd3wkJvi

Dylan Matthews over at Vox says the problem with U.S. charity is that it’s not effective enough. His piece is a response to Emma Goldberg’s NYT article, which questions whether philanthropy should always strive to be optimized—challenging the Effective Altruism mantra of getting the “most bang for your buck.” Around and around we go. Here’s the thing: philanthropy as we know it is a product of modernity and capitalism. The rules of the game aren’t going to change all that much—unless we abandon the system we have, and when we do, philanthropy as we know it will go with it. These debates almost always devolve into systems of shoulds: philanthropy should be more impactful, transparent, strategic, virtuous. But all of this misses a key truth: philanthropy, at its core, hinges on the gift—an enduring, mysterious, inherently unpredictable mode of exchange that resists systems and structure. No matter how hard the moralist tries to force the gift to follow their rules, to fit it into their system of shoulds, it won’t. It’s a fool’s errand.
The problem with US charity is that it’s not effective enough
