I'm proud to work with world-class scholars who have landed us at the top of the AFR best b-schools research list for 2024. This article quotes me, along with my colleagues Jamie Cross and Deshani Ganegoda, talking in depth about their great work, Jamie building econometric models that explain global oil prices; and Deshani on her examinations of how to improve workplaces by helping overqualified workers connect with and support others, and how to rein in abusive supervision by ensuring that managers above that supervisor avoid blind spots about that bad behaviour. These are just two of the examples of MBS colleagues who do rigorous science that offers immediate value to our students, and the broader community. https://lnkd.in/gP6ZCNM3

What does it take to be Australia's best business school for research? 📖 We took top spot for both research and reputation in The Australian Financial Review's Best Business Schools 2024 rankings this week - and those two categories aren't a coincidence, says Dean Jenny George. "Research is enormously important for your global reputation. What makes a business school stand out among its peers is the quality of the thinking of the people you have on staff; people who are genuinely advancing the field, who are doing research that is current, relevant and that fundamentally adds to the base knowledge of the field." Julie Hare spoke with Associate Dean of Research Jennifer Overbeck and several of our academics to learn more about their work, from Assistant Professor Jamie Cross using statistical models to help explain the effects of monetary policy on income distribution to Associate Professor Deshani Ganegoda's studies that challenge established wisdom about the human side of organisational behaviour. My new article in the Academy of Management Learning & Education (ABDC: A*, ABS: 4*), discusses how business scholars struggle to demonstrate scholarly impact in their work. Using accounting-based performance measurement systems as an example, we unpack the trajectories of compromise-making inherent to performance measurement in the Chinese business school arena and the particular justification, critique, and domination at play. We further provide evidence that the Chinese government's reform didn't achieve that elusive goal - impact rather than ranking. Read all about it in our article, which is available at: https://lnkd.in/gwgTWJAE

Monash Business School's commitment to helping our students solve real-world problems via industry partnerships has seen us excel in the 2024 AFR BOSS Best Business School rankings, released this week. Prof Simon Wilkie, Dean, Faculty of Business and Economics, and Head of Monash Business School, said the AFR results - in which we rank equal 1st on research and 3rd on reputation - stemmed from the high-level partnerships we are developing with employers such as Oracle and Microsoft. Prof Wilkie says programs such as our Impact Evaluation Framework, which recognises and rewards faculty members who help corporations, governments or NGOs fix real-world problems in the workplace, illustrate the School's "partnership mindset". “We wanted to create a virtuous cycle where we incentivise our staff to actually go out and talk to industry and find out what their concerns are, and then bring that back in-house so that we can work on these problems with our students,” Prof Wilkie says. “Hopefully that will lead to a win-win, to better quality research and to greater social impact.” The 2024 AFR BOSS Best Business School list ranks universities based on teaching, research, reputation and career impact. Great article on The Australian Financial Review that recognises the value of strategic partnerships across Universities and industry. Thank you to Prof Simon Wilkie for the vote of confidence in the Oracle partnership, how it can improve students’ employability and social impact by giving them skills that are directly transferable to the workplace. Prof Wilkie says “The work with Oracle in accounting is a good example of that ... we are co-developing the curriculum in some units so that students are exposed to the type of data and data platforms that they’ll be using in the real world, and also getting hands-on involvement in real-life case studies.” #Oracle #Universities #Australia #skills #cloud #erp #futureskills

The conversation around academia and industry collaboration is more important than ever. Ehmad Zubair shared a candid perspective from the industry, pointing out a critical gap: while industries seek skilled and adaptable professionals, academia often falls short in preparing graduates for real-world demands. This feedback isn’t about assigning blame—it’s about creating opportunities for growth. By working together, academia and industry can align educational outcomes with professional realities, bridging the gap and building a workforce ready to tackle future challenges. https://lnkd.in/enuAQybk
