February 29th marks the rarest day of the year – Rare Disease Day. It is a day dedicated to working towards equity in social opportunity, healthcare, and access to diagnosis and therapies for people living with a rare disease. According to the Canadian Organization for Rare Disorders, 1 in 12 Canadians will be impacted by a rare disease, with two-thirds of them being children.   Living with a rare disease has many challenges, including lack of scientific knowledge and quality information on the disease, which often results in misdiagnosis or a delay in diagnosis. New modelling data and real-world evidence from the UK, Spain, Germany, and the Netherlands predict that timely diagnosis and guideline-directed medical therapy in patients at high risk of CKD would improve patient outcomes, greatly reducing the economic burden associated with managing cardiovascular events. March marks National Kidney Month, spotlighting the critical importance of early detection and proper treatment of kidney disease. It's a time to discuss not just the challenges but the transformative solutions shaping patient care.   Kidney disease is not only common, with 1 in 10 Americans affected by chronic kidney disease (CKD), it's also a silent crisis. Patients can lose up to 60% of their kidney function without noticeable symptoms, making early detection a complex yet vital endeavor. Consider the numbers: Medicare allocates $153 billion annually (24% of its total budget) to combat kidney disease—a stark testament to its impact on our healthcare system and the lives of millions. This substantial expenditure underscores the need for preemptive strategies in disease management.   Leveraging digital tools for monitoring patient biomarkers over time and facilitating at-home testing, especially for high-risk individuals, can be game-changing. Early identification is key, as many therapeutics have the potential to treat or even reverse kidney disease when caught in nascent stages. At 11TEN Innovation Partners, we understand the urgency. We were honored to sponsor a recent roundtable focused on early detection of heart failure, kidney disease, diabetes, and other metabolic risk factors. The discussions centered around the necessity to update the content and frequency of preventive check-ups by general practitioners, the current landscape, and the required changes to the reimbursement decree, patient follow-up, and referrals. Key insights from the discussion included: 1. Revising the Preventive Check-ups Decree: It is essential to have more frequent and comprehensive check-ups to facilitate earlier diagnosis and treatment. 2. Digitalizing Laboratory Data: Streamlining information sharing and ensuring targeted treatment reimbursement. 3. Empowering GPs with Innovative Drug Prescriptions: Faster access to cutting-edge treatments for patients.
