Just finished listening to "#Data in #MusicMarketing: #Analytics for Success": https://lnkd.in/g5AgZmqq via SXSW recordings. Takeaways for those just getting started: *Everyone loves Chartmetrics but MelodyIQ is also a solid platform. *Reverse Engineer: if you see an artist like someone else, look at who supported the reference artist early on -- who in the press, who in radio or playlisting, what venues. *While you may want to be on all DSPs or streaming platforms, ensure you put your focus and nurture the platforms you are getting more back from. Similar with geography -- have someone on the ground in regions where you're getting traction. *You can DM someone working in editorial at DSP so long as well-packed, thoughtful and not bombarding them. Having someone at the DSP in your network to help you is a good idea.

Welcome back 360 major label artist deals.... In 2006 I joined Warner Music Group as part of an acquisition spree to turn the company (then in the doldrums of piracy riddled industry) into a full 360 solution for artists. Then of course streaming came along and most major labels forgot about that strategy. Now, 18 years on, as streaming flattens out - LOOK WHAT IS BACK! This slide is from Universal Music Group's Capital Markets Day deck (which you can find here: https://lnkd.in/eEGbxSkz) So, if you are an artist considering signing to Universal.....get ready for another rights land grab as they look to secure merch and direct to fan rights. But in a world where the "Why?" of a major label is under review - will any artist with leverage actually do this? Why would they be a better solution vs. leaning into (say) Spotify or TikTok's D2C fan tools? Or any of the other start up super fan solutions? We'll watch with interest.

Music is a business, so let’s start using the data businesses should use. Streaming platforms don’t use monthly listeners as their primary metric—they use subscribers. They don’t measure plays—they measure revenue. They don’t focus on pre-saves—they focus on conversion. A core part of EVEN is unlocking an artist’s data. This starts with first-party data and consumption insights, but more importantly, data that tells the story of the state of their business. Metrics like revenue per view, conversion rate, and total page views. Data like referrers, devices, and operating systems. And of course, to paint the picture in ways we’re all familiar with, how this data translates into the vanity metrics we’ve grown accustomed to, such as Streaming Equivalent. When artists and teams can start measuring what matters, they can truly take control of their careers, revenue, and relationships with fans. Because how does 1,250 streams equal 1 album sale? But that's for another day. Let's get EVEN. #musicindustry #musicnews #dtc #superfans #streaming #data #fans
