At #AUR24 here today in Boston, I was honored to speak on "Building a Team Ethos" for the GE HealthCare/SCARD LEAD program. LEAD is a phenomenal one-year women’s leadership program, jointly led by SCARD and GE Healthcare, consisting of a cohort of 20 female leaders from Radiology and GEHC. The program targets women who are at least mid-career with aspirations for increased leadership responsibilities & positions within their organizations and beyond. I consider this the top leadership development program in the field of radiology. We covered lots of ground for building teams, including: 1. Clearly define what success looks like. Do not assume everyone wants the same thing. 2. Different frameworks for building teams, such as Patrick Lencioni Five Dysfunctions of a Team, Tuckman form/storm/norm/perform, Netflix, and psychological safety. Choose one, blend them, or develop your own. The key is to have a framework. 3. Greatest challenge of the decade: building teams with remote workers. We ended with a concrete call to action: become a learning team. This means to continuously assess the performance of teams: what's working, what's not, and what to change. I have been involved in youth soccer in America for twenty-one years. When I arrived, I had already obtained my UEFA licenses from two other countries. When I decided to coach in the DA league, I was made to go through my licensing again. Sadly, these licensing courses are expensive, and this has been my only interaction with anyone from US Soccer. (Some positive and some negative) It seems to me that the leadership in US Soccer wants to eat first. The thought of having success and not taking credit for it is not in our DNA. The constant chatter about elite and national teams is overwhelming, and this sets the benchmark for the culture we create. We need a culture of servant leadership where having a mentality of the leader eats last. Servant leadership will affect the soccer community positively, and we will become more engaged and motivated. Servant leadership is a process involving getting your hands dirty to a degree few recognize. Are we willing to put our focus on the foundational side of sport? Where winning at all cost, elite and national level players don't exist (But they have all come from grassroots) By reworking how we talk about leadership and long-term development, we can help leaders of state organizations and clubs be better prepared for the realities of their jobs and stay motivated over the long term, an essential goal in these challenging times. Once you see the results of servant leadership, you will be inspired to share what you have learned with others. Helping others is contagious. By developing your own servant leadership skills, you will create a positive ripple effect within your own community and beyond. This can only be a good thing. The world needs servant leaders now more than ever. I just finished watching Fury —what an intense ride! The movie really drives home the realities of war and the strength it takes to stand together as a team. Here are a few key lessons that stood out for me: 1. Leadership isn’t just about giving orders, it’s about protecting and guiding your team even in the worst circumstances. 2. Tough decisions come with responsibility, but true strength lies in holding your ground. 3. Unity in the face of adversity is what keeps people moving forward. Have you watched Fury?
