A realistic and rather thorough set of comments/suggestions from the perspective of the vast majority of museums — although small in size, they represent a large contribution to the cultural life of our nation. Often, these are hidden jewels that add to not only rural settings but major cities where their presence shines and preserves unique perspectives. The failure to address these inherent characteristics of small museums, may often result in tragic outcomes: https://lnkd.in/gEv2zW67

An open letter to the American Alliance of Museums regarding their treatment of small museums. These are things I have noticed for years, but it was really made apparent at this year's annual conference. You can read the entire letter here or below: https://lnkd.in/eS8MHZGP

I would advocate for the #historyenterprise. Yes “small” museums get short shrift at AAM. The first AAM I went to in 1995 was the same when I went later. It was really for art, a totally different discipline. Small seems to mean whatever you want it to mean. I was a proud Field Services person and can tell you one full time and some part timers is a LARGE organization to many all-volunteer groups. Small is a comparative term not applicable to function. I have long advocated that museums aren’t a discipline. Museums are a delivery mechanism. History museums deliver history content, whereas art, children, zoos, etc. deliver their content. Museums simply aren’t a profession. You can argue this point but long ago I stopped believing that. The word ‘museum’ tends to be used as a catch all, but I guarantee those that work Field Services, publish history, supervise federal preservation, archaeologists, oral historians, community historians, etc. do not believe themselves part of a museum. We are all part of the history enterprise. I support Harry’s position. I would go further and say go wherever your discipline is. Your discipline will build up your organization.
