When you see good leadership through this lens, you’ll recognise all your anti performance environments and why they were that way! 💥📊
Last night I had the immense pleasure to connect with Andrew Lockwood
We recorded two episodes for the Performance Strategies and Stumbles Podcast
Andrew shared his 3 pillar fundamentals for leadership and highly effective teams, based on his experiences in the military.
He shared 3 synergistic pillars as:
1️⃣Shared Experineces
2️⃣Mutual Understanding
3️⃣Empathy
I loved discussing why these elements had to feature in high performing teams. It led me to compare and contrast the high versus anti performance teams I’ve been part of
1️⃣SHARED EXPERIENCES:
HIGH PERFORMANCE EXPERIENCE ➡️Teams I’ve worked with who go bigger than the sporting team, so experiences are positive and include family, friends, loved ones, community, identity and more
ANTI PERFORMANCE EXPERIENCE ➡️ teams who go through the motions, copy and paste “culture and values” then don’t “experience” it beyond leaving that meeting
2️⃣MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING:
HIGH PERFORMANCE EXPERIENCE ➡️coaches and leaders who clearly explain what, when, why and how they need what they need from players. All players are aware. All players understand the role and function of everyone. Staff are included in this, with their value and responsibilities understood by all
ANTI PERFORMANCE EXPERIENCE ➡️ dictatorships, “I say you do” and lacking any why or understanding. Lack of clarity on expectations and then individuals held accountable without those understandings being clearly defined
3️⃣EMPATHY
HIGH PERFORMANCE EXPERIENCE ➡️witnessing leaders deliver the tough news with compassion and understanding and choosing words and environment Wisely. Seeing leaders tuned into their staffs personality and behaviour and recognising when it’s out of the norm. Empathy isn’t just about kind words, but I’ve seen great leaders quickly identify someone’s needs, and move the environment around them to optimise outcomes. So, great environments have people being empathic without saying a word. They can move the ecosystem around their staff and players invisibly as and when needed
ANTI PERFORMANCE EXPERIENCE➡️token words, people being nice to make the situation easier, telling people what they want to hear.
Then 💥BOOM! Someone’s in a performance management meeting, deselected, transferred to another team, or moved on/fired.
Which environment are you in currently?
High performing or anti performing!?🎭
I can’t wait to share the episode in a few weeks time and thanks again to Andrew Lockwood
