In a world striving for sustainable development, innovation plays a pivotal role.
Today, on 9th April, I’m pleased to announce the launch of a new World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO report “Mapping Innovations: Patents and the Sustainable Development Goals”.
This comprehensive report provides data-driven insights into the intersection of patents and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). From eradicating poverty to ensuring clean water and sanitation, this report sheds light on how patents are driving progress towards a more prosperous, equitable and sustainable world.
The report was launched at a WIPO webinar earlier today in anticipation of World IP Day on 26th April 2024, which is themed the “IP and the SDGs: Building our common future with innovation and creativity”.
Some key takeaways of the report include:
· The identification of 100 distinct technology categories linked to the SDGs covering areas such agriculture, medical devices, renewable energy and transportation.
· Almost one in three active patent families worldwide (31.4%) are related to the SDGs.
· Some SDGs, like for instance SDG 9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure and SDG 13 Climate Action, exhibit substantial patent alignment, showcasing significant innovation activity. The report highlights growth trends in these areas.
· SDG 9 has the highest number of patents, indicating diverse technology landscapes within this field, SDG 13 Climate Action and SDG 7 Affordable and Clean Energy, reflecting an increasing focus on cleaner alternatives to fossil fuels.
