Great article on the global south by Ronak Gopaldas and ISS Africa. I agree with most points, not least the point on how diverse this group is - think of China, Mali and Somalia and their common interests internally as well as in relation to the equally diverse "global north". My main question and challenge: What can the global south as well as sub-groups and individual countries do on their own? Not least in #Africa I think the internal positioning as well as an implicit (and sometimes convenient) victim role is too often seen as the starting point. In my experience, there is no such thing as a free lunch - no matter how unfairly the funding of the lunch has been arrived at. Example: the articled uses Ukraine as an example where the West has engaged, but then partially neglected Gaza and Sudan and Ethiopia. This may be true, but what has Africa done on Ethiopia and Sudan? And what would be the right balance? Certainly worth reading. https://lnkd.in/dka5AHBK Nic Cheeseman Peter J Evans Dan Jørgensen Anne-Mette Kjær African Center for Economic Transformation (ACET)

Mali’s decision to sever ties with Ukraine is definitely a step in the right direction. However, if Africa truly wants to put an end to the ongoing crisis and the loss of lives we experience daily, we must prioritize addressing our internal issues. Africa’s strength lies in unity; divided, we can’t possibly thrive. While it’s okay to build alliances with the West or the East, it will never be to Africa’s advantage if we remain divided. We need to nurture these relationships as a united Africa, not as individual nations. BRICS, Russia, US, EU, UAE, China, Turkey and so on. The consequences of failing to do so will only lead to further collateral damage and more casualties among our people. How long are we going to turn a blind eye to this reality? The longer we do, the more lives we will lose, and the greater the challenges the next generation will face. It’s time for Africa to wake up. https://lnkd.in/eixh9wb2 #oneafrica #swahilination #africa #mali

Africa is a net food importing continent and its land and agriculture is used to supply commodities to rich countries - coffee, cocoa, soy, palm oil, metals, minerals, etc. This is the continued imperialism of the West. Indirect rule while still stealing resources and labour, creating a market for expensive Western finished product and food, creating debt and so extracting much more than it puts in. This has to end and Africa has to be compensated. Reparations need to be paid by the West. This imperialism has been going on for 500 years.

Weekend Reflection: Nigerian government and some of the leadership of her private sector, under the sterling of President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu are currently in France to strenghten bilateral economic relationship. Meanwhile some of the Francophone African countries- in particular Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso are changing the old economic and political land marks, turning away from the same government they once embraced. We (Africans) need to interogate why these new developments and what would be the impacts of this new evolution at national and global levels? One of the African Union's aspirations is for Africa to speak with one voice at the global arena, are we making progress along this line, or is the new developments another unfolding strategy from Africa, which way Africa? I wish our continent a prosperous and united Africa.
