🎁 𝗦𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗝𝗼𝘆, 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗲𝗯𝗼𝘅 𝗮𝘁 𝗮 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 🎁 Some of the amazing team from our Ireland office recently spent a heartwarming day volunteering with Team Hope, checking and assembling gift-filled shoeboxes for children in need. These carefully packed boxes are now on their way to bring smiles and kindness to children in third-world and war-torn countries — just in time to make their Christmas a little brighter. We’re proud to support such a meaningful cause and contribute to spreading joy where it’s needed most. 2 years clean! Two years ago, I spent a few minutes removing a lot of graffiti from this National Cycle Network sign in Edinburgh city centre to make it legible again. Since then I’ve been noticing how long it has stayed clean. That’s my kind of fun - one year was exciting enough but two years has almost blown my tiny mind. This is the power of microvolunteering – a small act can have a big impact. It’s something Sustrans has been building into their spectrum of volunteering for some time through Quick Ways to Volunteer, and now through the Action Team (https://lnkd.in/ew7VdvP5). Because it’s something more people are looking for in their volunteering. As a recent article on flexible volunteering in Pro Bono Economics reminds us, time pressures are the biggest barrier for charities engaging volunteers - “In a changing world, where people are constantly being pulled in so many different directions, the sector needs to harness its flexible and adaptable nature in its approach to volunteer recruitment and retention – because that’s what volunteers are seeking. Potential volunteers want to see flexible opportunities and assurances that they can give back to their communities in small ways at first, which don’t overwhelm their already stretched time.” And, yes, I know, I missed a bit of the purple paint. Maybe I’ll find a few minutes more for that. #microvolunteering #lovols #volunteering

For the last few years, I have had the honor of volunteering with Dallas CASA, an organization that recruits, trains, and supervises community volunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children in protective care. Volunteering with this organization has not only been eye-opening, but heart-breaking at times. As an advocate for these children, our work involves meeting with kids on a monthly basis, advocating for their interests in court, and addressing any issues they face in school, health, or other areas of their lives. One of the most jarring realizations is that in many cases, there isn’t anyone else beyond us looking out for the kids. There is no backup. The system is overloaded and isn’t designed to deal with the complex problems that arise for these kids. The job of the advocate is to be that person that takes action and does all they can to intervene in the child’s life. This work is a reminder that as each of us observes the problems we have in this world, we can’t simply rely on the system or expect others to step up. It's easy to assume there are already measures in place or that someone else will take care of it. In reality- if we want to see change or make an impact, we have to do it ourselves. When we see issues in our community, we owe it to each other to bear the responsibility of change. We need to recognize that each of us has the power to make a difference. By getting involved, we can help bridge the gaps and provide innovative solutions or much-needed support where it’s needed most. Whether it's through volunteering, advocacy, or simply being a voice for the voiceless, every action counts. #CommunityImpact #VolunteerWork #DallasCASA #ChildAdvocacy #TakeAction
