Since joining Media Development Investment Fund in 2022, several of you have asked me "what exactly does MDIF do?," "what is impact investing?" and "how does a not-for-profit investment fund work?" Here's a recent Reuters Breakingviews podcast with our CEO, Harlan Mandel, discussing our mission and investment model. I look forward to your questions and comments!
"Just because they're digital companies doesn't mean they can scale like a tech company can. It's a different kind of business" This is what MDIF CEO Harlan Mandel said about the challenges faced by #VC funded digital #media companies that expect quick growth in today's media market. In this conversation with Lisa Jucca on The Exchange Podcast (Reuters Breakingviews), he also spoke about the current state of the media industry and the role that media investing can play in dialing up other issues such as #diversity, #humanrights and #climatechange. #media #socialimpact #investing #startup #freepress Full episode 👇 https://lnkd.in/egwVjm7B

Episode 20 of our Investor Insights series features Richard Carlyle from Capital Group. Global stock markets have become increasingly concentrated over the last decade. The US share of global indices has risen considerably, reflecting in part the far superior earnings growth from US listed business, driving valuations to a premium and, in turn, attracting a greater number of non-US businesses to the US market. The dominance of the largest companies within indices has also increased dramatically with many measures of concentration at the top-end of markets comparable, or even exceeding, that of the most extreme periods over the last 100 years of market data. Trends such as this have significant implications for asset allocation and stock selection and in this episode we discuss this, amongst other topics, in the context of one of the largest equity investment managers, Capital Group, which has run strategies with a consistent investment process across multiple economic cycles. Ever wonder what drives top LPs in the VC world? 🤔 Hint: It's not just about the returns...💡 I'm thrilled to share a sneak peek of this week's podcast episode featuring Aakar Vachhani, Managing Partner at Fairview Capital Partners. With over $3.5B AUM and a 17-year tenure, Aakar brings a wealth of insights on emerging managers in VC. What struck me most was Fairview's mindset: 'Waking up every day to prove people wrong is just a big motivator for us, and we're just obsessed with our work.' As a GP, this energy is infectious! It's inspiring to see an LP so passionate about backing emerging managers and fostering diversity in the industry. In the episode, we discuss: - The evolution of Fairview's approach over the past 15 years - Why they're bullish on emerging managers, especially in today's market - How they identify funds with great culture (it's not just about track records!) - Their thoughts on the future of AI in VC Whether you're an LP, GP, or just curious about the inner workings of VC, this episode offers valuable perspectives on building long-lasting partnerships in the industry. Stay tuned for the full episode dropping later this week! 🎙️

💡 Did you know that $100 invested in 1988 would have returned $398,723,873 today..... The Medallion Fund by Renaissance Technologies holds the title of the greatest performing fund in history, boasting an average annual return of 66%. This week, we mourn the loss of its founder, Jim Simons. In 2022, he humbly reflected, "I did a lot of math. I made a lot of money, and I gave almost all of it away." Jim and his team of math professors approached the capital markets with a fresh perspective and a diverse skill set. This serves as a powerful reminder for our own businesses: the individuals who can make the most significant impact on your organization or industry might not even be in the industry yet. Keep an open mind, and bet on people regardless of their background. If you're interested in the history of Renaissance Technologies, The Acquirers Podcast recently did a fantastic episode on them. 🎧 https://lnkd.in/efJBkRjA #Leadership #Innovation #Investing #JimSimons #RenaissanceTechnologies #OpenMind #Diversity #TheAcquirersPodcast
