Interesting podcast for anyone curious about Product Management… Over the course of my CRE career, I’ve held delivery roles, “Subject Matter Expert” (SME) roles, and more recently, made the leap into Product Management. Looking back, some of Marty Cagan’s insights would have been invaluable in the early days—not just for understanding the mechanics of product management, but also ensuring we had the right support, leadership, and structure to succeed. The podcast shines a bright light on common pitfalls I experienced firsthand when stepping into the role. While I wouldn’t trade the lessons learned, being aware of these common issues early on could have helped us avoid missteps and deliver greater impact from the start. Three Key Takeaways that really stood out for me included… 1) Beware of inflated teams and “product management theatre.” (~12min) 2) Focus on building empowered product teams and understanding the difference between “feature teams” and true product teams. (~18min) 3) Clearly define and communicate the Product Strategy to set teams up for success. (~1hr13min) It’s a thought-provoking listen—well worth the time for anyone navigating or building a product management function! #cre #productmanagement #phorkast https://lnkd.in/gSbeEUaK

A real gem lesson for the folks who would truly like to understand how the true product management looks like: 💥 Don't mistake Product Management as Project Management 💥 Sign-up for delivering outcome vs output to your customers 💥 You aren't a facilitator, but a creator and a curator 💥 Focus on Time to Money than on Time to Market 💥 Focus on value and viability of a product and let the engineers focus on feasibility 💥 Prioritize pain killers over vitamins for your customers and users 💥 Be an expert on data; know your product, how is it being used, purchased, what needs to be changed; represent product issues, compliance issues, marketing issues, sales issues, monetization issues Marty Cagan and Lenny Rachitsky Thanks for such an eye opener podcast. #productmanagement #productmanager #productleader #productowner #marketing #sales #semiconductors #product

Couldn’t agree more. “Feature factories” may be easier to establish and run but they don’t provide the level of value needed in today’s fast paced world… As more organisations move to the product operating model, im sure we’ll see many more feature factories spring up than genuine Product Teams.

The truth is a lot of people dislike product managers because they haven’t worked with real ones. Having someone show up at a daily stand up and ship features is not the job of a real product manager. That is a project manager’s job. Unfortunately a lot of companies have masked them under product manager titles over the past few years which has impacted the reputation of this role. As Marty Cagan said it so well in the latest podcast from Lenny Rachitsky real product managers make sure they provide outcomes and not outputs. They don’t focus on the number of features launches per quarter but instead make sure their features have true customer value which hopefully involved business impact. So if you are blindly executing and are working in a feature-product-team make sure to plan a way to uplevel the team and start influencing change. — ✏️If you need help upleveling and becoming a product manager (the real kind) book me for 15 min on intro. Here are my key takeaways from an amazing and insightful podcast on the future of product management by Marty Cagan and hosted by Lenny Rachitsky: - Understand your customers and users well by having "1st hand interactions" - There is a difference between developing a feature vs. solving a customer problem - Many-a-times PMs are doing more project management than product management - Product management is much more than just authoring stories at JIRA or administering backlog or conducting scrum ceremonies - Some key principles: -- Innovation is more important than predictability -- Learning is more important than failure -- Principles are more important than processes -- Demonstrating "real ownership" https://lnkd.in/g6TQSZp6 #productmanagement #products #customers #products #quality

I happened to watch this episode of Lenny Rachitsky's podcast by Marty Cagan and felt that it was a goldmine of information especially for someone who is gonna start as product manager shortly. Here are some Key Takeaways: 1) Rise of “Product management theatre” & “Product leadership theatre” 2) Empowered product managers vs feature team product managers/project managers. Real product managers are given hard problems and not features which is a project manager responsibility. Key skills for Product manager - Understanding customer, market, business, leveraging data & working with compliance, legal, marketing, sales teams, working on go-to-market etc. 3) Misconception of bottom-up culture being referred to as empowered product management where as Marty says product leaders & product teams are different entities and each have their own responsibility. Product leaders define strategy and big bets. Product teams are given the onus to create value for customer with business viability (Value & Viability). 4) Is it okay to be a feature team product manager in a B2B setting as the process is top-down sales led ? - No, this is the reason why B2B products aren’t considered good products. There’s scope for disruption by good competitor products if they work on product operating model. 5) Talking to 30 customers being used as a pre-requisite by his mentor before starting as a product manager - Customer understanding improved greatly. 7) Product ops as a function is primarily user research and data analytics and should be used as a support function for multiple product teams but misused as APMs/ doing strategy for bad product leaders. 8) 20 Principles to move from feature factory product teams to real product management are mentioned in his new book - "Transformed". Product Management Lessons from Mission: Impossible Inspired by a recent chat with Dr. Anja Martens, I've been thinkng about the original "Mission Impossible" TV show from the 1960s. Reflecting on when I watched reruns of the show as kid, I believe "Mission Impossible" illustrates many important lessons for product management and beyond: -Clear goals and detailed planning: Each episode begins with a (self-destructing) brief on the mission goal, followed by a detailed mission planning scene. Despite having unique roles, all team members are aligned toward achieving the goal, which becomes critical, as we'll see. -Team Diversity: Every team member has a different background and unique specializations. Depending on the mission, different team members may be included, though there is always a core group. The team's combined expertise is matched to each particular mission. -Catastrophe, Improvisation, and Flexibility: In almost every episode, there are "black swan" events that destroy the original mission plan. The team is then forced, on the spot, to find alternative ways to achieve the mission goals. As all team members are aligned on what the goals are, they manage to achieve them, sometimes even more fantastically than originally planned. These principles, should we choose to accept them, may allow us to achieve our own "impossible missions!" #productmanagement #productleadership #missionimpossible #teamleadership #improvisation

Not that this podcast needs a plug, but I this episode really struck a chord. Melissa Perri’s take on Agile and SAFe might stir up some debate, but it’s packed with insight about how Product Management needs to evolve. She doesn’t just see product management as a role—it’s a fundamental way to build great products. As she puts it: “Product Management shouldn’t just be one part of development. It’s how we build great products.” Highly recommend this episode for anyone who wants a fresh perspective on product strategy and Agile practices.
