Wonderful news for Healthcare workers in the USA. Stress, mental health problems and burnout are at an all time high. It's good to see the federal government taking steps to create change. "As part of the first federal campaign to address healthcare worker burnout, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) today released an evidence-informed and actionable guide for the nation’s hospital leaders to improve healthcare worker wellbeing – Impact Wellbeing™ Guide: Taking Action to Improve Healthcare Worker Wellbeing. This Guide is the newest addition to the Impact Wellbeing™ Campaign, launched in October 2023, and provides a step-by-step process for hospitals to start making organizational-level changes that will impact and improve the mental health of their employees." #healthcareworkers #physicians #burnoutprevention

Good piece in Safety+Health Magazine on the latest guide from National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) on improving the mental health of hospital health care workers. What's behind the initiative? According to NIOSH, the number of health care workers reporting harassment on the job doubled from 2018 to 2022. Meanwhile, half of surveyed health care workers in 2022 said they intended to look for a new job. Given the crisis-level numbers, the CDC launched its first federal campaign to address healthcare worker burnout. And as part of that broader campaign, the CDC and NIOSH released the Impact Wellbeing Guide: Taking Action to Improve Healthcare Worker Wellbeing, outlining the following six measures for healthcare organisation leaders to take to improve the mental health of their employees: 1. Conduct a review of your hospital’s operations to determine how they support professional wellbeing. 2. Build a dedicated team to support professional wellbeing at your hospital. 3. Remove barriers to seeking care, such as intrusive mental health questions on credentialing applications. 4. Develop a suite of communication tools that help you share updates with your workforce about your hospital’s journey to improve professional wellbeing. 5. Integrate professional wellbeing measures into an ongoing quality improvement project. 6. Create a 12-month plan to continue to move your hospital’s professional wellbeing work forward. Hello Connections! Hope you all are doing well🙂 The Importance of Mental Health in the Healthcare Industry In the healthcare industry, the well-being of our patients is paramount. However, we must also prioritize the mental health of our healthcare professionals. As frontline heroes, they face high levels of stress, long hours, and emotionally taxing situations daily. Addressing their mental health is crucial for several reasons: 1. Quality of Care: A mentally healthy workforce ensures better patient care. When healthcare providers are well, they can deliver compassionate, attentive, and accurate care. 2. Job Satisfaction and Retention: Supporting mental health leads to increased job satisfaction and lower turnover rates. Happy and healthy employees are more likely to stay, reducing the costs and disruptions associated with high turnover. 3. Resilience and Productivity: Mental wellness equips healthcare professionals with the resilience needed to cope with the demanding nature of their work. It also enhances their productivity and ability to handle complex cases effectively. 4. Cultural Shift: Promoting mental health in the workplace fosters a culture of openness and support. It encourages employees to seek help without stigma, creating a more supportive and understanding environment. 5. Patient Safety: Healthcare workers under mental stress are more prone to errors. Prioritizing mental health reduces the risk of mistakes, thereby safeguarding patient safety. Let's advocate for mental health support programs, regular wellness checks, and creating a supportive work environment. Investing in the mental health of our healthcare professionals is not just beneficial—it's essential. #MentalHealthMatters #Healthcare #Wellbeing #EmployeeWellness #QualityCare #HealthcareHeroes

If we are to improve the UK’s productivity, we must address the barriers to early intervention. Early intervention involves encouraging employees to be open about their feelings, allowing us to intervene before problems escalate. Proactive steps at the onset of illness are heavily supported by evidence as an effective strategy for minimising long-term health issues and workplace disruption. ⚠ The average cost of sickness and presenteeism to UK employers is £71,000 a year and rising. If we do not act now, this figure could exceed £100,000 by 2030. The Livewell Advocate Workshop is designed to support early intervention strategies in the workplace. This workshop, which is for ALL genders, provides tools and techniques to help employees manage their health proactively, fostering a culture of openness and support. By attending the Livewell Advocate Workshop, employers and employees can learn how to: 👉 Recognise early signs of illness and stress. 👉Encourage open communication about health and well-being. 👉Implement effective sick leave policies that prevent long-term absences. 👉Create a supportive work environment that prioritises mental and physical health. For more information and to participate in the Livewell Advocate Workshop, drop us an email on info@manhealth.org.uk By removing barriers to early intervention and promoting a proactive approach to health, we can significantly improve productivity and reduce the financial burden of sickness and presenteeism on UK employers.
