“And we will address those issues that Europeans feel the most in their daily lives. Take housing. Europe faces a housing crisis, with people of all ages and families of all sizes affected. Prices and rents are soaring. People are struggling to find affordable homes. This is why, for the first time, I will appoint a Commissioner with direct responsibility for housing. We will develop a European Affordable Housing Plan, to look at all the drivers of the crisis and to help unlock the private and public investment needed. Typically, housing is not seen as a European issue. Some might say we should not get involved. But I want this Commission to support people where it matters the most. If it matters to Europeans, it matters to Europe.”

UPDATE ALERT!
🇳🇱 Dutch political parties PVV, VVD, NSC and BBB have reached a preliminary deal to form a government. This announcement caps six months of tense negotiations - where migration remained a hot topic much like in the lead up to the elections. And if you have read through the deal, you will know that migration is still a key priority for this coalition. The government agreement still needs to be approved by the Parliament. It remains to be seen which points will be included in the formal government program and what implementation might look like. Next steps include confirming a prime minister and filling the rest of the cabinet positions. 💡Our Fragomen team in Amsterdam is always on top of political developments and today is no different - reach out to your Fragomen contact if you have any questions or concerns as to how this may impact your strategic business planning. And if you are an individual living in or considering a move to the Netherlands, our private client team led by Tugba Ozyakup is here for you, too. 🇧🇪 And as this long awaited development for the NL plays out, you should be aware that our Belgian team is gearing up for the Belgian elections in June. Belgium and the Netherlands share a lot of similar labor market shortages and challenges that need to be addressed by remaining open to international talent. The debate on EU enlargement in the Netherlands is beginning to get some depth and interest. Rather than for or against, the discussion yesterday in de @EuZaTweedeKamer was about how we can prepare, what reforms and changes might come on the agenda of policy makers, what lessons we have to take on board from previous enlargements and what the Dutch position might be on key issues. Hope we will be having more of these nuanced and forward looking debates with policy makers as enlargement negotiations gather momentum. For my international friends / (former) colleagues: We do have a new cabinet in The Netherlands. 🇳🇱 We live in a polarized society, and we are not the only ones. 🌎. There are many challenges, and opportunities too. What do we consider fact and fiction ? 🧐 How do we value freedom of expression and request for information from citizens ? ⚖️ How can we share opportunities and wealth better & fair ? How important remains international solidarity ? How can citizens regain confidence in politicians / the government ? Curious on the progress, and not a mere spectator.

The four coalition parties in the Netherlands reached a deal yesterday night. The 26 paged coalition agreement is broad and abstract, and the details will matter significantly. The chapter (10) on the economy is remarkably short and solely focusing on, and supporting competitiveness and investments. This misses any future proof vision of broad welfare (brede welvaart), something NL governments have been great supporters of in the past decade. Chapter 7 on good governance and a strong rule of law features prominently in this cabinet agreement. While the incoming Dutch government plans to cut budget and reorganize and reform public broadcasting, in this chapter it seems to stress the value of media pluralism. In the very same breath, this chapter recognizes a core constitutional role for The Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets, but puts the authority into the very uncomfortable position of safeguarding national strategic interest concerning information provision and media. This, as so many issues since the Dutch elections last November, is for me a déja vu from Hungary and its #RoL crisis. This is a great summary concerning the priorities of the incoming Dutch government. I want to stress again the choice of further strengthening the powers of the Dutch Competition Authority, one of the most active and dearing competition authorities in Europe. I think we all know what this means for enforcement and creative #competitionlaw

EU election results: No end for the Green Deal The recent EU election results have brought significant changes, particularly for the Green faction, which lost around 20 seats. Does this mean the European Green Deal will come to a halt? According to NRC, such concerns may be overblown. Numerous laws have already been initiated in recent years, many of which are still set to come into effect. Hardly anyone in Brussels expects this process to be stopped. Bas Eickhout, the leader of the European Greens, emphasized on Sunday that he does not foresee a rollback of climate policies. However, Eickhout also noted, "I do think it will be more complicated to get new policies off the ground." #EUelections #GreenDeal #Sustainability #Organicfarming #Retailindustry https://lnkd.in/eZgEfDqu

The new 'minister' for development cooperation (renamed development aid) for the Netherlands is a radical right-wing politician with zero affinity with development, who earlier promoted its 'abolishment'. Led by destructive and irresponsible populists and opportunists, the Netherlands is saying, for now, goodbye to a respectable and constructive role in international development. This is happening at a time of multiple global crises that need truth, commitment and humanity - for us to get through this together and overcome the challenges that touch all of us. Let us hope that this stint of destruction and inward-looking smallness and ill will lasts only briefly. Meanwhile, let us be creative - in exposing the idiocy and malice involved, and keep on mobilizing for a better world. That need is more, not less than before this. #internationaldevelopment #populism #Netherlands
