Our Insurance Operations team gathered in Buffalo, NY, for an unforgettable 3-day offsite packed with insights, strategy, and a whole lot of Buffalo pride!
From diving deep into customer experience and enhancing app features to exploring marketing strategies and the impact of our ambitious 2024 growth plans, every session brought us closer to our mission: to redefine and radically improve how people manage car ownership.
Of course, it wasn’t all work. Our local team gave visiting colleagues a true taste of #Buffalo, complete with legendary wings and a tour of the iconic home of the Buffalo Bills, Highmark Stadium.
We left Buffalo energized, aligned, and ready to drive forward together toward an even more successful 2025. 🚗✨
36 Hours of Insight, Action, and Connection
Just returned from a whirlwind 36-hour trip that took me from Fort Worth to San Angelo and Abilene, and back again. Each stop brought its own set of revelations and responsibilities, underlining the relentless pace of progress in our ventures.
🚗 On the Road: Kicked off with a drive to San Angelo, touring our properties, and engaging directly with our laundromat operations and shopping centers. We’re committed to excellence and continuous improvement—it was enlightening to see the impact of recent upgrades and also note areas where we need to step up our game.
📚 Community Engagement: Delivered children’s books to our laundromats. It’s always uplifting to see these spaces thriving, becoming community hubs that go beyond just providing services, but also enriching lives.
🏋️♂️ Personal Reflection: Each day began with meditation and an early workout—fueling the body and mind for effective leadership.
🍽️ Strategic Discussions: In Abilene, a meaningful lunch with a business partner not only strengthened our bond but also helped us align our visions for future growth.
🏢 Exploring New Opportunities: Visited potential sites for new laundromats, met with tenants, and engaged with the community, reaffirming our commitment to expanding our presence thoughtfully and impactfully.
📖 Continuous Learning: On the drive back, listened to Richard Rohr’s Immortal Diamond. His insights paralleled the deep conversations I had about our strategic direction and growth.
🤝 Team Collaboration: Ended the journey with crucial conversations with partners, setting a solid plan of action.
This trip was a potent reminder of the power of focused energy and intentional actions. I’m grateful for the amazing team and community we’re building with. Here’s to making every mile and every moment count toward creating value and positive change.
Also..I have driven by this bridge at least 20 times on my way to/from San Angelo. Finally took a moment to snap a few photos. Life is beautiful.

As we explore ways for Buffalo to capitalize on its strengths and address its weaknesses, we'll also be exploring ways for members of the business community to be actively involved.
If you can do just one of these four things, Buffalo as a whole will be better off.

After a long day at Rottnest Island, the perfect spot to watch the sunset, enjoy a wood fired pizza and a cold ale – Gage Roads Brewing Co.
Although now listed on the ASX, it was initially started by 2 brothers John and Bill Hoedemaker and their mates.
Not a traditional family business but the same challenges arise. How do they communicate with one another? How do you ensure their vision is aligned? What happens if someone’s priorities change and they want to move onto a new venture? What does the future look like for the rising generation and how do they prepare the rising generation for the legacy they are building?
Family businesses come in all shapes and sizes but the challenges and opportunities available are often the same.

A cooperative is so much more than a shared ownership structure. According to Dr. Keith Taylor from UC Davis Cooperative Extension, a CO-OP is a potentially powerful economic development tool for neighborhoods and communities… and yet it is rarely utilized as such. New Helvetia Brewing Co. is embarking on a bold conversion into a community & worker-owned CO-OP, and you can be part of this groundbreaking transformation.

"Why [Invest] in Chicago's Far South!"
Tuesday's Edition: Local Business Community
I believe we as a city need to have serious conversations regarding this city's business community. This is not about passing the blame again but recognizing our business environment in the city changed drastically post-COVID 19. Go to any number of communities from Rogers Park to Morgan Park to Garfield Park and the commonalities are the same with persistent vacant storefronts.
There are various components as to the challenges facing commercial landlords/owners and business tenants, such as the lack of employee attraction and retention, workforce and skills development, depopulation, high cost of operations in supplies and labor, costly and untimely regulations and fees, public safety, online market, over saturation, inequitable incentive structure for certain types of businesses (small businesses vs large national business incentive structure), inaccessible financial resources to remodel or expand operations depending on your business location.
It may be advantageous for the city to host four to six business forums this year led by local Chambers of Commerce and/or Community Development Corporations (Forums: Southside, Far Southside, Near Westside, Far Westside, Northside, and Downtown). We need to re-examine our approach before throwing money in a wet paper bag by funding the same programs that are outdated and no longer impactful in this post-COVID and slightly post-inflation economy.
Chicago's far south side has experienced successes and disappointments. We celebrate the successes of Blue Cross Blue Shield in Morgan Park, Pullman Redevelopment and National Park, and Discover in Chatham. But we also are concerned and disappointed with the closing of the Chatham Cinema, KFC closings, and the decades of neglect along Halsted and Michigan Avenue. Even nonprofits are getting crushed with financial burdens of doing way more and receiving way less as the demands are far exceeding the supply. Nonprofits are the last defense before an under-served community completely submerge.
Our city's business community successes cannot be judged by Downtown's success alone. We must learn and understand the challenges within each side of town. Commercial vacancy is a virus that does not permeate in only one area but spreads eventually to every area of the city and it must be stopped. This virus exploits the weaknesses in every area. We cannot ignore it, neglect it, or hope it will get better. Our actions must be intentional, inclusive, unbiased, data driven, and sufficiently funded.
