There has been increasing talk from academics about leaving academia to work in industry, and that is perfectly understandable. A large proportion of recent PhD graduates are already flowing directly into industry jobs, without even giving academia a second thought. Perhaps this is a result of the fact that our sector is plagued with uncertainty, and that for many academics, what they came to academia for (e.g. direct interaction with students, campuses buzzing with life and deep interactions with esteemed and knowledgeable colleagues) no longer exists. I always wonder if, now more and more respected academics are looking beyond the borders of their profession, a transition to industry is worth it? According to Nature's career surveys, there are significant incentives for a move. The survey reports that people in industry are generally: - More satisfied with their jobs - Better paid - More optimistic about the future As someone who has straddled academia and industry for a while I recognise these thoughts, but I also find some issues with a potential transition such as what job security looks like in industry, or how to maintain a steady income as a freelancer, how to maintain your integrity when your livelihood is at stake, or whether the way you approach client engagements changes when industry is your only source of income. Early career academics report that perhaps an industry transition is easier at that time given early career academics are less set intheir ways. Additionally, they are often younger than those in later stages of academic careers, which might mean that can 'afford' to be more flexible. I am interested however to hear from those who have taken the step to industry as a more seasoned academic. What was the main driver? How do you find it now that you made the transition? Which skills did you find translated best to your industry job? Which stage of your career were you in when you decided to move to industry?
