Somehow, I turned 47 a couple of weeks ago. 2024 has been a year of transitions already, with more to come. It's been a humbling year, with setbacks on the professional and personal fronts. But I could not be more grateful. I'm thankful for my life--and all its setbacks and missteps--and the people who have provided support and advice. After a wonderfully rewarding few years, my time at VMware, like that of many hundreds of my former co-workers, came to an unceremonious end in January. Just as when I was laid off in 2020, I may have grossly underestimated the time to re-employment, if you know what I mean. It's a tough market out there in tech marketing at the moment. The silver lining is that during this interlude, I've had time to reflect on my career and conclude my talents best lend themselves to messaging strategy, thought leadership, and executive communications. As an editor by nature, I help people clarify and articulate their thoughts, often to memorable results. I love working with people to think through what they want to communicate and create the feel and impact they're aiming for. I’d love to run an enterprise content team or newsroom again. Running a thought leadership practice is on my career bucket list. I'm also thinking about hanging out my shingle as a messaging strategist. (Btw, your thoughts on whether that's a viable idea would make a mighty fine belated birthday gift. Just sayin'.) If you find yourself in the Austin area and would like to chat (maybe about a Kapor Foundation workshop I did earlier this month! Or this paper on AI-assisted marketing that I co-wrote at VMware! Or Scott Galloway's latest book! Links in the first comment!), I'd love to hear from you. Thanks again to the generous folks who have shared their time and thoughts with me over the past several months. Frank Slootman, the CEO who led Servicenow's growth from around $100M in revenue to $1.4B through an IPO and took Snowflake public - one of the largest software IPOs in history, shared in his book "Amp It Up" that he has hired executives in the past who were successful in their previous roles, well-liked, and well-respected, but still turned out to be terrible hires. He believes that: 1. Hiring decisions are naturally fraught with bias because so many human qualities are impossible to measure objectively. 2. It's forgivable that some hiring decisions end up as failures, but what's not forgivable is refusing to recognize, acknowledge, and take action on hiring mistakes. In our decade of experience working with tech executives, we've noticed that even the most accomplished leaders encounter this challenge. Effective solutions are available. As we approach the end of March, I have to admit — this has been my diciest Q1 on record. And talking to many business owners and peers, it seems like I’m not alone. Here’s a small snapshot of the turbulence of 2024 for me: - Lost a local client - we were bundled in with the PPC provider and both got canned ❌ - Renewed almost half a million $ worth of contracts in first couple of weeks of the year ✅ - Lost a team favourite account to CapGemini ❌ - Started creating content again for socials and our blog ✅ - Lost a client who went into insolvency (non-SEO related, thankfully for us) ❌ - Currently have $250k worth of contracts in the pipeline ✅ Today marks the first day of Spring. Yes, renewal, flowers, rebirth, and everything else that comes to mind when you think of Spring. But for me, all I can think about right now is innovation and reinvigoration. I know what I need to do and what my business needs to do. Staying motivated and focused is crucial, but even more so as I combat my way through the pessimistic economy that’s on our doorstep. How’s your Q1 been? Are you experiencing any of what I’ve described?

I am done playing it safe and staying silent. I used to care a lot about what others thought of me. I was afraid to try new things and worried about what people would say or think. - What would people think of my writing voice? - What if I wasn't interesting enough? - What if they don't see my value? Hard truth: Everyone judges, I will be judged no matter what I do. So, Why not be judged for my courage and bravery, boldness and strength Rather than for my complacency and silence I'd rather be judged for something brave I have done than stay quiet and wonder "What if?” It's hard AF sometimes. Fear still creeps in, but I choose to push past it and not let it define me. Because at the end of the day, it's my life and my choices. And I want to be proud of how I lived it. To anyone else struggling with this, remember: Judgement happens regardless - what do you want to be judged for? so why not take your leap Be bold. Be brave. Be YOU - Let them judge you for that. Who's with me?! ------- P.S. 📅 Join my LIVE “Ask me Anything” Event. 🎉 Celebrating 5 Years at RingCentral! 🎉 Wow, what a journey! 💥- also means I need a new 5 year plan, my core aim when asked the question was to expand enablement and make it an important function. Today marks my 5th anniversary with RingCentral, and I’m taking a moment to reflect on this incredible ride. I was initially brought on to introduce programs from Sheevaun Thatcher, CPC's amazing team to the UK and Europe, but what I’ve gained over the years goes far beyond that. Here’s what I’m most grateful for: 👥 People, People, People I've had the privilege of onboarding over 400+ employees and delivering training to 3000+ people worldwide. Working with leaders like Steve Rafferty, Louise Newbury-Smith, Sarah Gross (Fricke), Carson Hostetter, and many others(I could list 50+ here) has shaped how I understand impactful revenue enablement. But it's my incredible colleagues from across the globe that make this journey truly rewarding. 💡 Key Lessons Learned Teamwork makes the dream work: It’s been an honor to work with amazing teammates like Alan McIntosh, Alina Spatariu, Cristina P., Cameron Taylor-Lynch, Emily Bryan, Heather K., Chelsea Drucker, Freddie Haynes, Jon Kershaw, & Thorsten Stiller. You all have been a huge part of these 5 years! 🙌 Impact matters: It’s not just about training—it’s about enabling. 💪 Give back: Thanks to Sheevaun Thatcher, CPC, I joined the Revenue Enablement Society, where I’ve grown, learned, and even had the privilege of co-leading the chapter and serving as the International Expansion volunteer. 🌍 Learning never stops: Just last week, I learned something new from Niall Carter & Lauren Barber's team—proof that every day brings new opportunities to grow. 📚✨ There’s so much more I could say, but I’ll leave it at this: Thank you to everyone who’s been part of my journey these last 5 years. 🙏 Here's to many more exciting years ahead! 🚀 #5YearMilestone #Grateful #Teamwork #RevenueEnablement
