“I don’t know if you want to be good at this, but you are.” This was the single most memorable piece of feedback I have ever received. I was 25 and taking a break from my corporate career to travel the world and figure out what was next. My ‘stakeholder’ was a guest at a hotel in the Rocky Mountains of Canada where I was working as a server. She had warmly commented that my service over lunch that day was better than the other servers working at the hotel (teenagers on their gap-year). I tried to hide my distaste as I smiled and thought internally “I should bloody hope so!” She saw my reaction and quickly softened her initial compliment. “Well, I don’t know if you want to be good at this, but you are.” What she was hitting upon was what Whitney Johnson calls your ‘Superpower.’ One of the methods to identify it is that you’re often complimented on it (and you dismiss the compliments because to you it seems obvious and easy). I am (despite a snobbish resistance to it most of my life) naturally good at Service. When I was 15 it was called Customer Service, in my corporate career we call it Client Service. Funnily enough, my mother has been a massage therapist for forty years and it’s a lot of the same skills, probably inherited from her. The ability to listen to stated needs and also hear the unspoken ones. The ability to empathise with multitudes of perspectives. Being able to take specialist concepts, which you are very familiar with, and communicate them in a manner tailored to your customers level of understanding. It took me many years to embrace my Superpower, what do you think yours is?

Things I’ve seen correlate to tech sales success: Hospitality industry experience (Nordstrom’s, hotels) Service industry experience (bartenders, waiters) High ticket sales (real estate, cars, boats) Team / individual sport experience Door-to-door sales experience 🤷♂️ Things I’ve never seen correlate to tech sales success: College degree / no college degree “Prestige” of university College major GPA Hard working, curious, customer-oriented people who like to drive outcomes for themselves and others. Nothing beats that. #sdr #sales

Thrilled to share a quick reflection that resonates deeply as I navigate this job search journey. 🌟 Did you know a bottle of water can vary in price depending on where you buy it? 🚰 📍$0.25 at Costco 📍$0.50 at the supermarket 📍$2 at a bar 📍Up to $3 at a fine restaurant or resort 📍Even $5 at an airport or on a plane The bottle and the brand remain the same; it's the environment that shifts its value. 🌍 This concept mirrors our professional lives. If you ever feel undervalued, remember it might just be the environment, not you. Like that bottle of water, your worth can change dramatically when you find the right setting that recognizes and appreciates your true value. 🌈 Let's not settle for less. Have the courage to change your surroundings and align with those who see your worth. Here's to finding our own "airport lounge" where we are valued most! ✈️💖 #CareerGrowth #ValueYourself #JobSearch #Inspirational #ChangeYourEnvironment #KnowYourWorth #Networking Feeling inspired? 🎄✨ My Christmas Wish… 🎁⭐️💫 As I embark on my final business trip of the year to Paris, I’m taking the opportunity to blend work with pleasure by exploring some of the city’s iconic landmarks. From the majestic Eiffel Tower to the artistic treasures of the Louvre Museum and the charming streets of Montmartre, I’m making the most of this visit. With just one meeting standing between me and quality family time, this trip is both productive and personally fulfilling. Reflecting on my past few months in consultancy, I’ve gained valuable insights into the importance of company culture, values, and interpersonal interactions. However, consultancy isn’t my long-term path. What truly drives me is being part of a business that values its teams, building long-term success, and watching hard work create thriving businesses and high-performing teams. After experiencing the setback of a retracted job offer, I’ve learned an important lesson, relying on just a few irons in the fire isn’t enough. Instead, you need to embrace the opportunities around you and open yourself fully to the market. Now, with several irons actively steaming away, I’m taking a leap of faith by sharing this journey with my connections, trusting that the right opportunity is just around the corner.. I am actively seeking permanent opportunities as a Sales Director or Director of Business Development. Here’s what I bring to the table: 🎯 B2B Sales Expertise - Taking deals from initiation to completion with a proven track record of success. 🚀 Strategic Business Development - Identifying and seizing growth opportunities. 👥 Leadership and Team Development- Inspiring and mentoring teams to achieve and exceed goals. 🌍 Market Diversification - Experience across FM, retail, and leisure sectors, with skills that adapt to many industries. I’m open to opportunities beyond FM if the right role aligns with my strengths and passion for growth. If you know of any such opportunities, or would like to discuss potential collaborations, please reach out! 🙏I’d also be grateful if you could share this post, sometimes the best opportunities come from unexpected places. 👊🏻 Wishing all my connections a magical Christmas season 🎄🎅 I’m so grateful for the blessings I’ve had this year and look forward to new beginnings in 2024 and thank you for anyone who has supported me, really….Thank you 🙏 Finally, my true Christmas wish is simple 💫 Health and happiness for everyone who wants nothing but good in the world. 💫 Let’s make it happen! 🙌✨ #SalesDirector #BusinessDevelopment #FacilityManagement #Leadership #FMJobs #Networking #ChristmasCheer #facman #ParisAdventures

Being inspired by a Porta-Potty was not on my bingo card for 2024! 😅 But, recently, at a friend's wedding, I was astonished by the portable facilities that I unexpectedly encountered (enough so that I felt that I had to document it at the rehersal). And I'm not sure what your Porta-Potty experiences have been like in the past, but for me, they have been consistently sub-optimal. Almost in all cases, prior to this one, the portable toilets I’ve used have met the minimum standard of what those in my culture would consider a toilet. And it got me thinking… Is there anything in my professional or personal life that I only aim to meet the minimum standard? Do I, when given the opportunity, do the bare minimum on tasks that those around me already have low expectations for? Or do I aim for a Deluxe Porta-Potty experience? Aiming to delight and surprise even in the mundane and seemingly unimportant. My question to you is, what is your professional Porta-Potty Experience? Have you been aiming to astonish with your work even when the expectations are incredibly low? Do you strive to do your absolute best no matter the importance of the task or assignment? Stop and consider what your work says about you in all occasions and in all circumstances. You never know, but your work could be someone else's next best #portapottyexperience. P.S. I define a “Porta-Potty Experience” as an event or occurrence that an individual had low or no expectations for prior to experiencing it. — So, do you have a “Deluxe” #portapottyexperience that has inspired you in your work? If you're willing to share about it, I'd love to hear it! 😁

In this week’s Employee Spotlight we get to know Regional Sales Director Vicki Ellis. Tell us about your role. “I joined Home of Choice as part of the founding team back in March 2005 and was lucky enough to become a Regional Sales Director in February 2023. The role covers the North West firms and the North East while Donald is seconded. The best bit is definitely meeting the firms and formulating plans and ideas which helps the firm’s growth. 📈 The meetings are an ideal time for principals to take a helicopter view of their business.” What do you get up to in your spare time? “Spare time is generally being Mum’s taxi for my 14-year-old. 🚕 Between football training, matches and tennis there is not much time for anything else! I do manage to get to the gym and love a class or two. I can generally be found at the back, ‘dancing like no one is watching…’ 💃I love to travel and tick off destinations from the world map. The Maldives is firmly on as a bucket list destination.” Tell us a fun fact about you. “I danced from an early age until I left for university at age 18, it’s probably why I still love the gym classes which involve some dancing! Get to know Vicki Ellis in our quickfire questions 👇 Gym workout or pamper treatment? Although I love the gym, there is nothing better than a spa day with friends 🧖♀️. Roller coaster or lazy river? Roller coaster though I hate heights. 🎢 Go figure! Summer or winter? Summer. BBQs, camping and time outside in general are divine. 🏕️ If only we could guarantee the weather in the UK! ☔🌤️ Super strength or ability to fly? Ability to fly. That would save some £s for my love of travel. I couldn’t live without my… car. It would be a long walk over the M62 each week 😂, though most of the time it is like sitting in a carpark… My biggest life lesson was… you can do anything but not everything (Claire Madge will recognise this one) #ProudToBePRIMIS

How I built a strong network from zero (that I celebrate today) Working as a cabin crew was challenging - I worked with new people every day - I couldn’t build strong relationships Then I started my business - without a strong network - without strong relationships It didn’t stop me. I stepped into the unknown. I learned people and built trust. My engine was the trust within me - to be able to inspire others - to be able to create journeys for others Today I celebrate - the care I put into my customers journey - the trust I gained from my customers I’m so grateful for - all my referrals - all my repeat guests Those are my KPIs. My mission is being there for my clients → when they need me Network of people around me is priceless. PS. How do you build a strong network?

I have seen over my life three things that have made honest people successful: 1. A strong work ethic in whatever job they held 2. A stick-to-itiveness for when things got tough, they still pressed through 3. An ability to take risks, whether it was a career change or a promotion, with much more responsibility Those three traits have made a positive impact on the following people's careers listed below: - A former garbage man turned Corporate Area Director for a multi-billion dollar company - A former carnival worker turned VP of Operations for a multi-million dollar company - A former garbage man turned Regional Sales Manager for a multi-million dollar company - A former IT programmer turned VP of Sales and Marketing for a multi-million dollar company - A former garbage man turned Regional Manager for a multi-billion dollar company - A former landscaper turned Director of Customer Service for a multi-million dollar company - A pastor who became the Director of Sales for a multi-million dollar company - A former garbage man turned Business Development Manager for a multi-million dollar company “Success seems to be connected with action. Successful people keep moving. They make mistakes, but they don't quit." —Conrad Hilton

After mystery shopping in an airport, I am thinking about changing careers. I believe I may have missed my calling. I passed through the store almost unnoticed. MI5 or MI6 would surely be interested? Was it the skills I have honed that enabled me to blend in, to be a grey man in a retail store? Or was it something to do with predominantly agency staff chatting amongst themselves. It wasn’t just Beauty, it was Liquor too. Admittedly it wasn’t busy but there was a steady stream of passenger all of which have money in their pockets that require a little encouragement to spend. I stood at one super premium fragrance counter and the staff were too busy with paperwork to notice that I had a question. There were several staff stood in a line chatting away on the counter next to it. If Travel Retail is serious about growth it MUST address the apathy. It must create fire and hunger within the sales teams. Here are my top 3 tips…. - bring in highly effective sales floor managers who are permanently on patrol driving the teams. - beauty brands….. learn to sell to men. It is a massive opportunity. I have yet to have a great experience in the beauty category. - start developing selling skills. A little investment will go along way. People are the magic ingredient that turns a flat retail experience into one that people are willing to part with their hard earned cash. Does this just relate to one store? Unfortunately not. This is my general experience in airports. We must do better. As for the role of James Bond… I don’t think Aaron Taylor Johnson has anything to worry about! Right, I have a run to do and meetings to prepare for. Until next time…. #travelretail #dutyfree #airportretail Image by Feodor Chistyakov on Unsplash

I spent two years of my life working as an overseas pizza delivery person. I would wake up every morning in Tuscany, wait for a pizza order to come in, and then sail across the Atlantic Ocean to deliver it. On many occasions the storms would be relentless and my ship would capsize. Harsh ocean fogs would make navigation nigh impossible, but we would have no choice but to persevere. My company had a specific policy: "Your pizza will be delivered in 24 hours or it will be free." Those were the rules I was hired under, so those were the rules I had to abide to. After that career, I pivoted into job where I would coach people who wanted to go "rooftopping." If you're unfamiliar with the industry, it's an up-and-coming sport where you free-hand climb city skyscrapers and try not to get caught. For legal reasons, I cannot admit to which buildings I had mastered, but I can boast that my numbers are in the double digits. In 2011 I coached over forty different clients into climbing these monstrous buildings (and there were zero fatalities or lawsuits). This was one of my favorite careers, but unfortunately life had other plans for me. In 2015 I performed open heart surgery on my neighbor's Dalmatian. It was a life or death scenario, and I sprung into action. With just a couple of tools lying around the garage, I managed to save that dog's life. (And he's still alive to this day; I get a Christmas card from him every year.) I'm not sure where I got this skill, but a large part of me knew that I had to put it to use. That explains the section of my resume that says I was a privately contracted animal heart surgeon for about six years. Even if you're good at a job, it's important to never become complacent. To continue this pattern in my life, I decided to switch careers yet again. A few years back I took up a part time job as a professional wrestler, while at the same time also getting a part time job selling dictionaries door-to-door. It was very difficult juggling the two jobs; some days I would forget what job I was doing. One day I brought a dictionary into the ring, and on another occasion I began to wrestle a man at his own doorstep. I was stretching myself thin and I needed to take a step back. And now I'm on LinkedIn, sharing my stories and hoping to hear some in return. Every job makes a mark on you and changes you into who you are now. Don't like the job you have? Let that experience launch you into another career, another field, another industry.
