Sky is the limit? - Or rather is the #MainBelt the limit for detecting #small #asteroids? No, not anymore! ☄️🔭 In our latest #Nature publication, which was just released today, we discovered more than 100 new asteroids with sizes down to 10 m using the James Webb Space Telescope #JWST! We made use of its incredible sensitivity in the infrared and combined the detection method with synthetic tracking techniques, so we could go as faint as 0.5 μJy in the flux level. From these detections, which are now the #smallest known objects in the main belt, we derived a new size-frequency distribution that exhibits a break at 100 m, thus suggesting a new #population of asteroids driven by collisional cascade. The article "JWST sighting of decameter main-belt asteroids and view on meteorite sources" was mainly contributed by Artem Burdanov and Julien de Wit from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Came across this fabulous image while looking for something else on the European Space Observatory site. It is the young star HL Tauri, about 450 light years from us, estimated to be about 100,000 years old, with a highly structured protoplanetary disk of dust and molecular bits and pieces. Imaged by the ALMA radio telescope array in Atacama, Chile (at 5000 m a.s.l.). The dark bands or gaps may indicate early planet formation by accretion of dust, much like our own Solar System is thought to have formed 4.6 billion years ago. Hubble Makes First Direct Measurements of Atmosphere on World Around another Star. November 27, 2001. Astronomers using the Hubble Space Telescope have made the first direct detection of the atmosphere of a planet orbiting a star outside our solar system. Their unique observations demonstrate that it is possible with Hubble and other telescopes to measure the chemical makeup of alien planet atmospheres and to potentially search for the chemical markers of life beyond Earth. The planet orbits a yellow, Sun-like star called HD 209458, located 150 light-years away in the constellation Pegasus. https://lnkd.in/dXgyKngv

Exoplanets are planets which are found outside our solar system.Light years means years it will take to reach another celestial body from Earth. This Exoplanet was discovered in 2015. It is located 124 light years away from Earth. Initially discovered with the Kepler space telescope, it was later observed by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) in order to study the planet's atmosphere. K2-18b is a potentially habitable exoplanet, approximately 2.6 times the size of Earth, with oceans covering its surface. The JWST has identified carbon dioxide and methane in its atmosphere, indicating potential biological activity.

When talking about a telescope, many think of one giant instrument pointed at the sky. However, with astronomical interferometry, scientists can use software to combine images from several smaller telescopes. This is the case with the ngVLA prototype shown in the image. Together with 243 additional dishes in its core array, it will create a virtual mirror with an aperture equal to the separation between them. With its 18 metres in diameter, it is still an impressive structure, part of the future of space exploration.
