In the small town of Sisters, Oregon, Stitchin' Post quilt shop has spent nearly 50 years building a fun community around quilting. Every summer since 1975, founder Jean Wells has hosted a huge Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show that brings together quilters from across the country. But Stitchin' Post also connects quilters online all year long. They share quilting tips and patterns on their forums and social media for fans near and far. Fans share photos of projects and ask each other questions - new friendships form over a shared love of quilts. They work hard to create spaces where quilters can "stitch" together new bonds - both online and in the real world. Here's what they focus on: 1. Pick something people are excited about - for them, it's quilts! 2. Bring people together both virtually and at in-person meetups.   3. Encourage friends to chat, share ideas, and have fun. With some creativity, retailers can make their own communities centered around common hobbies, interests, or values. After all, people want to share experiences. Why not give them places for that?
