The tradition of lighting bonfires on 5 November is over 400 years old. Perhaps the original sentiment being lost in the passages of time. It is however a chance to celebrate the failed Gunpowder Plot with communities coming together, enjoying the festivities of bonfires and fireworks. I remember being excited but also confused as a child: why were we celebrating something that didn’t work; not understanding how tightly woven church and state were; and the precariousness of the King’s position being transported from Scotland 2 years prior, to unite the crowns of Scotland and England. Through 2024 optics it’s easier to see that it was more a celebration of thanks that our political system survived. It’s Britain’s own thanksgiving for the failed plot to kill the King and blow-up Parliament. I don’t think we have any other specific celebrations of democracy in Britain as you may see elsewhere in the world. It got me thinking about failures in the business world and in the workplace. It is very difficult for people to be honest and open about how they have failed at something, yet successful business people will have many stories of failure. Elizabeth Day, Podcaster and Author of How to Fail has some great advice: “If you can remove your ego from a process, then there really isn't any difference between success and failure. They're just both parts of a process. And that you shouldn't look at a failure as something terrible, it just is what it is and you shouldn't look at success as something great, it just is what it is.” Failure is the opportunity to grow and succeed and get better. In some industries, this is key, for example the airline industry, so eloquently explained in Matthew Syed’s book Black Box Thinking. Do you provide safe spaces to explore mistakes so that everyone learns from it in your organisation? Or do you sweep it under the carpet, meaning the mistake can be made multiple times? Perhaps 400 odd years later it is time to talk more about how mistakes happen and take away the fear in order to grow and thrive. At Reflective HR Consultancy, we are all about people growing and businesses thriving. Meanwhile over the pond, electors will be taking to the polls and perhaps there will be fireworks of a different kind by the time we wake up tomorrow morning, or the next or the next! Here in the UK hopefully we will see more silent fireworks, organised displays and safe bonfires so that everyone can enjoy the festivities. #GuyFawkesNight #BonfireNight #RememberRemember

New blog post on grassgoddessconsulting.com!
My Hall of Flowers Santa Rosa blog post is complete and would love for you to check it out. Here's a preview: Friday morning I walked over to the fairgrounds and ran into Ian A. Rassman at security. We chatted a bit as we strolled through one of the halls and chatted with brands. Shortly after I found a couple of my favorites, Brian Holler and Jeff Levers from the Beard Bros Pharms and we bumped into Peter Olander from Happie scoring some CBD seltzers. I met Pete at the Dunkz coffee and donuts event at Emerald Cup, he's also from Chicago and is very thoughtful about the ingredients used in his hemp drinks. In our hyper-digitally connected world, fostering real-life community has never been more crucial. No matter your industry, local businesses are eager to team up and attract new customers together. According to the 2024 Square Future of Multihyphenate report, over one-third of restaurateurs highlighted the need for more events to foster in-person connections. Whether you run a salon, gift shop, or brewery, partnering with nearby establishments can amplify awareness and drive more visitors through your doors. Ah, the age-old question: what's the difference between a shamrock and a four-leaf clover? It's a question that has puzzled mankind for centuries. Okay, maybe not centuries, but it's definitely a question that comes up every St. Patrick's Day. I can't tell you how many times I've heard “Oh, look at the cute shamrocks!" when they're actually looking at four-leaf clovers. So, let's set the record straight: — particularly, because I’m using both in some of my branding and marketing. So, until next time we slosh some beers … “Is fearr Gaeilge briste, ná Béarla clíste” ( “Broken Irish is better than clever English” ) ☘️ What's a Shamrock? A shamrock is a three-leaf clover and is the symbol of Ireland. Legend say that St. Patrick used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to the Irish people. Yeah, I think I remember that fable. Each leaf of the shamrock represents a different part of the Trinity: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. It's a beloved symbol of Ireland and can be found on everything from t-shirts to mugs to keychains and cereal boxes. 🍀 How About a Four Leaf Clover? Four-leaf clovers, variation of the three-leaf clover and are believed to bring good luck. The chances of finding a four-leaf clover are about 1 in 10,000, so if you do happen to find one, consider yourself lucky indeed. Some people even believe that finding a four-leaf clover is sign that good fortune! ☘️🍀 To Sum It Up Shamrocks have three leaves and are the symbol of Ireland, while four-leaf clovers have four leaves and are believed to bring good luck. It's a simple distinction, but one that's worth knowing, especially if you're planning on celebrating St. Patrick's Day. And I’m so looking forward to day! Now, why do people always confuse the two? Mostly, it's just a matter of not paying attention. Seriously ☘️🍀 But other times, it's because people think that anything green and leafy must be a shamrock. And let's be real, when you're wearing green beer goggles on St. Patrick's Day, it’s s easy to get confused. So, there you have it: the difference between a shamrock and a four-leaf clover. And if you're ever in doubt, just remember: three leaves ☘️ for Ireland, four leaves 🍀 for luck. Here’s to a Happy St. Patrick's Day next weekend! “Sometimes, I’d rather be lucky than good.” — Stephen Carter King The Lesson: Be great today — everyone, and be “magically delicious!” Slàinte☘️! #Irish #StPatricksDay #ConsumerBehavior #BrandAwareness #EmergingTrends #BusinessIntelligence Source: The Irish Spring ✦✦✦ Stephen Carter King Chief of Growth and Marketing and Beerconomist + CEO of Beerconomy & Co. with beer market trends, analyses, and news Steve@KingsCrossing.com • Kings Crossing
