Hearing the news of Sir Ratan Tata’s passing has left me with an immense sense of loss. The impact he has made on India is beyond words, but I want to try to express my gratitude here. Being an HR professional, we often talk about ‘empathy,’ but there is no better example of ‘empathy’ than Sir Ratan Tata himself. Despite being a Global Industrialist and an Entrepreneur, he consistently demonstrated empathy in ways that are rare. From personally visiting a sick employee’s home to canceling an award ceremony at Buckingham Palace to care for his unwell pet, his actions spoke louder than his feelings. He built the Nano car after seeing a family getting drenched in the rain on a motorcycle, and during the tragic terrorist attack at the Taj Hotel in Mumbai, his compassion toward both staff and guests was deeply moving. You influenced generations, as even the younger ones feel this loss today. His life was filled with acts of kindness and leadership always. Growing up, I was always inspired by his stories, but today, I find myself wondering how I can express even a fraction of the values he lived by, both in my personal and professional life. I will teach my son that whatever he achieves in life, being a good human being, is the most important lesson, something your journey has profoundly taught me. Sir Ratan Tata, thank you for being a light of inspiration, you will be remembered forever. #ratantata #inspiration #tatagroup #legend #hr #empathy #indianlegend

It’s with profound sadness that I reflect on the passing of Ratan Tata, a man whose legacy of integrity, humility, and leadership is unparalleled. I vividly remember seeing him during the late 80s at the US Club golf course in Colaba, where he would spend quiet evenings with his dog on the lawns, far from the limelight. His presence was a reflection of the values he carried—discreet, respectful, and deeply humane. “Rata uncle,” as I fondly called him, was not just a business leader but a true gentleman whose character transcended the corporate world. His integrity was unmatched—he made decisions based not just on profits but on principles, with an unwavering commitment to ethics. He always put the welfare of others first, whether it was through the Tata Group’s far-reaching philanthropic endeavors or his personal gestures of kindness and generosity. His honesty and sense of responsibility earned him respect not only in India but globally. I don’t know how many such men, with the depth of values and quiet strength he possessed, can ever take his place. His life will continue to inspire countless people, but we will always feel the void left by his absence. “Rata uncle” was truly one of a kind—a legend, both in business and in life. #RatanTata #Leadership #Integrity #Legend #TataGroup #Philanthropy #BusinessIcons #Legacy #Respect #Gentleman #Values #Inspiration #RoleModel #Ethics

Taking the High Road Last week, the dairy giant Amul's Ad captured the nation's emotion "Poore Vatan ka Ratan." Truly, Ratan Tata was a gem of a person who always chose to take the high road, choosing people and principles over profit. Growing up near Jamshedpur, or Tatanagar, I witnessed the Tata legacy firsthand. For me, “Tata” was synonymous with quality, social responsibility, and excellence. Whether it was annual inter-mines sports or other competitions, Tata Teams consistently displayed their highest standards; consistently dominating the medal tally. Ratan Tata further embellished this legacy with humility, ethical leadership, and a value-driven approach. Over the past week, social media and news channels inundated us with tributes from people from all walks of lives across the globe that sparked conversations about his leadership, business models rooted in ethics and values. This reflection made me wonder: Why are leaders like Ratan Tata so rare? Why is it hard to find leaders who display grace, dignity, generosity along with a sharp business acumen? Why aren’t we all Like Ratan Tata in our own small worlds? Taking the high road means responding with grace when faced with negativity. It’s about rising above the popular norm and denying our self-centredness. In our relationships and interactions, there will always be moments when others take the easy low road. But if we respond like the majority, we lose the opportunity to rise above. By taking the high road, we maintain our integrity and moral standing. #John Maxwell and #Max Anders offer a few practical tips: * When an acquaintance says something inappropriate, take the high road. * When a coworker undermines you, take the high road. * When a spouse makes a comment that could be misinterpreted, take the high road. * Value all people: Everyone has worth, regardless of differences. * Give more than you take: Offer more than you expect in return. * Embrace authenticity: Be true to who you are. * Do the right thing for the right reasons * Place people above your agenda * Bring people together: In a world that often divides, be the one who unites. There are many reasons why we don’t always choose to take the high road—qualities like empathy, dignity and kindness may not be modelled, and abrasive personalities or confrontational behaviour are increasingly normalised in society. However, we have the ability to unlearn and relearn. It all begins with a desire to challenge the status quo. We must believe that we can cultivate the admirable qualities we see in others and let go of limiting attitudes. While attitudinal changes take time, effort, and patience—and we may stumble along the way—the pursuit of growth is far better than remaining unchanged Let’s stand out like a ‘sore thumb’ in a world of mediocrity and strive to uphold greater values and ethics. Let’s be a small ‘ratan’ (gem) in our own small worlds.

Top 5 qualities that I felt & noticed differentiates Mr. Ratan Tata from all other great Indian business leaders of modern India, and that makes all of us admire and look up to him with utmost respect.. 1. Humility - Had modesty on his sleeves. Famous story about him helping his driver to change the flat tyre on his way to business meetings to save crucial time. 2. Purpose - Always had a greater philanthropic purpose to impact the lives of humans, animals. 3. Ethics - Built the brand & grown the brand TATA with ethics. 4. Inclusiveness - Sense of responsibility and ownership towards Tata employees, associated vendors, treating them as family in adverse situations as Taj Hotel Terror attacks. 5. Perseverance: Had to face multiple failures, challenges through out his career; persevered his goals and visions. A very profound and impactful leader; no more, leaving a rich legacy. RIP Sir Ratan Tata.

𝗢𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘂𝗽𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗠𝗿 𝗧𝗮𝘁𝗮... Ratan Tata, one of the most well-storied doyens of India Inc, evoked both admiration and scrutiny throughout his career. Here’s an anecdote from an early interaction with him that has stayed with me, a lesson for all leaders—present and future. Sometime in the late 2000s, I attended an annual general meeting of a Tata Sons company. After the shareholders’ address, I approached Mr Tata with a few fellow journalists. A senior PR representative abruptly blocked our way, stating Mr Tata wouldn’t speak. Despite our insistence on standard protocol, he rudely pushed us aside. Noticing the commotion, Mr Tata intervened, politely asking the PR person to step aside. He apologized for the situation and took the time to answer our questions, addressing some while gracefully declining others. Two key lessons that left an impression on me: 𝟭. 𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺’𝘀 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗸: Mr Tata defended his team member without public reprimand, attributing the behavior to pressure. He prioritised protecting his team’s dignity while managing the situation. 𝟮. 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗮𝗻𝘁: Mr Tata’s self-assurance allowed him to engage with us respectfully, even when declining sensitive questions. Your legacy will live on, Mr Tata. Rest in peace. #RatanTata #Leadership #BusinessLegacy #Respect #TataGroup #CorporateLeadership #EmpathyInLeadership #Tribute
