It’s what Dads do, right? Stand out on the lawn watching the weather while the rest of us huddle for safety inside. At least that’s what my Daddy did. Growing up in the south we were never short of threats from the weather. Tornadoes. Hurricanes. Blistering droughts. Ice-dripped dangers that shut everything down. There’s a lot of research that says we behave differently in the presence of threat. Left long enough? It becomes our identity. My Daddy was someone who made a lot of threats- mainly because he’d always lived with them. He was the youngest of an exceptionally dysfunctional family. He was stabbed by a sibling. Shot by a step-father. And, so, well, my 5’7 Daddy was a scrapper. Balled up anger aided by half a century of manual labor had his stature convey someone you didn’t want to cross. Not to mention, he was brutally honest. That usually invited more threats as well- but mainly from the other party. Yet what was remarkable was seeing the change in my father as he aged. Someone who previously had been exceptionally rigid in his manners and insight suddenly became much more amenable to others’ views. This was confounding, ya’ll- if for no other reason than because Daddy wasn’t exactly the kind of guy to let you get a word in! And my father’s transformation went against his nature. It went against all the research. Heck, it went against Newton’s Law! Suddenly he was no longer the king of any topic. No longer the one trying to one-up you. No longer the one using his brawn as intimidation. What was it that did it? Reading. And, as the Almighty is my witness ya’ll, it started with “Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader”. One of us girls had given him a copy of the book as a gift and soon we saw him reading it at the kitchen table. Then, when weather was crummy and he couldn’t work? He started reading our books. Only our books weren’t as much fun, you know. So then he had to visit the local bookstore. And soon enough, my Momma- who has a degree in reading- was complaining about not being able to keep him stocked up enough. Just as much research out there that exists about threats affecting our behaviour, so too is there a great deal about the transformative power of reading. We know that children who are prolific readers score far better on standardised tests. We know that readers become learners and learners become leaders. We know that the greatest leaders of all time had a vast library. And so much more. So this all has me thinking about the power of transformation. Not just in how a singular book can carry you into all kinds of realms and characters. But in the way that the words within those books imprint themselves upon us. Forever. If threats and fear make us feel small, reading makes us feel limitless. It amplifies our capacity to be better. It changes us. I know this because I saw it with my own eyes. The eyes of a stone mason’s daughter. Happy Growing! -M. #MullMentum #NarrativeLeadership #GenerationalMentorship

Idaho is taking a very comprehensive approach to wildfires, ranging from new codes to better information and a greater focus on community engagement. That makes so much sense. The final mile will to help homeowners understand what they can do too, like increasing defensible perimeter, fire resistant roofing materials, and more. And that's one place where carriers can play a very important role, as partners in home protection. #predictandprevent #customerexperience #customerengagement #homeownersinsurance #claims #riskprevention #ai
Idaho Director of Insurance Dean Cameron joined Governor Brad Little in recommending 10 new priorities to reduce the impacts of wildfires: https://lnkd.in/gcvB7eb8 Director Cameron shared highlights from the Idaho Department of Insurance’s Wildfire Risk Forum hosted in April, his experiences touring the Gwen and Paddock Fires this summer, and how the DOI is attending town halls in affected communities to assist with claims.

At this point, two of our pullets are full-fledged hens. We have two new egg colors yet little idea from which two. My thoughts are Penelope and Indy are the culprits. Up until now, we've only had Kam laying her pretty blue eggs. Buffy has turned into the rooster of the bunch and flat-out quit laying eggs when we added to our group. Change isn't necessarily appreciated by everyone. Buffy is also livid we cut off her free-range life-style once we lost two hens in rapid succession to a hawk. She jumps on a perch and stares at us, yelling in her chickeny-way. She's kind of the drama queen. Change isn't always fun, trust me. My Tex-Mex depression is far from over! Yet this is where reframe comes in. There is usually a different pov which will shake things up a little and add some glimmers. 😉 They are there. I promise. Enjoy your day! Three days in, two to go, and my first #IWC meeting has been anything but disappointing. 🐋 🔥 We’ve witnessed #historic #agreements, standing ovations, heartfelt interventions, and even #pisco #sours. But we’ve also seen divisions emerge, with hard lines drawn and a struggle to find consensus on key issues. At the centre of many of these debates lies one crucial topic: the #moratorium on #commercial #whaling. This vital safeguard has come under attack from those who seek to hunt, kill, and profit from whales. Some have pushed for resolutions to lift the ban outright, while others have used more subtle tactics—like stalling progress or refusing to pay fees—in an effort to undermine the IWC itself. One tactic that has been revived for #IWC69 is the proposal for a new category of whaling under the guise of food security—a so-called ‘livelihoods whaling.’ Supporters argue that killing whales to sell for money with which to buy other food will address food security issues. But in reality, this proposal simply reintroduces commercial whaling under a different name. The intent and purpose goes against the spirit of the moratorium. Right now, this is a live issue. Drafting groups are deep in discussions, and the outcome is still uncertain - it looks like we might be discussing this issue for the next few years to come. But what gives me hope is the incredible community of like-minded individuals fighting to #protect #whales at all costs. Later today, we expect key #votes on this and other critical issues. We're all watching closely, mindful of the bad-faith tactics seen in previous meetings. Will they resurface? It’s going to be a tense 48 hours, but we’re working around the clock to ensure the best possible outcome for #whales and #dolphins. Stay tuned—there's still hope for a #positive outcome. 🐬
