After 4 years of running peer support programs out of our local offices in the GTA, we've learned firsthand the positive impacts that the peer support model can have for individuals struggling with addictions and for those impacted by incarceration. During National Addictions Awareness Week, we wanted to highlight the intersections between justice involvement and addiction and take a moment to recognize our Peer Support Workers for their continued dedication and support. #NAAW #PeerSupport

REENTRY & RELATIONSHIPS Families are the primary stakeholders, yet they lack a voice in discussions about reentry programs. Often, behind closed doors, a spouse may feel relieved when their loved one is incarcerated, which shouldn't be the case. Currently and formerly incarcerated individuals need to recognize how their unresolved issues (PICS) negatively impact their family members' mental health. Seek to understand, not to deny – prison has side effects. #supporrtgroupforprisonwives #reentryandrelationships #postincarcerationsyndrome #mentalhealth #PICS #domesticabuseawareness #prisonwives

🔍 The Hidden Intersection of Addiction and Criminal Justice As a seasoned professional in counseling and addiction treatment, I've observed a critical need for understanding the complex relationship between substance abuse and the criminal justice system. The Journal of Addictions & Offender Counseling is at the forefront of exploring this intricate connection. Key insights from recent research: • 65% of incarcerated individuals meet criteria for substance use disorders • Evidence-based treatment in correctional settings can reduce recidivism by up to 40% • Trauma-informed care is essential for both addiction and offender counseling As counselors and policymakers, we must push for integrated approaches that address both addiction and criminal behavior. The journal's focus on prevention, treatment, and counselor attitudes is crucial for developing effective interventions. What innovative strategies have you seen in addressing this dual challenge? Let's discuss how we can bridge the gap between addiction treatment and criminal justice reform. #AddictionCounseling #CriminalJusticeReform #EvidenceBasedPractice

What does this mean? Many system impacted women have experienced significant trauma before their incarceration, including physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. This trauma often contributes to mental health issues, substance abuse, and behaviors that can lead to criminal activity. The criminal justice system frequently fails to address the underlying causes of criminal behavior, particularly for women. Those who have experienced trauma may not receive adequate support or treatment, perpetuating a cycle of victimization and incarceration. Proactive acts can change the way the system operates. #Change #SystemImpacted #womenempowerment #womeninspiringwomen #Reform 🖤⛓️💥💪🏼

Relink.org would like to share some recent data from the February Edition of the Mental Health & Addiction Advocacy Coalition's newsletter: 'Taking too many lives.' Overdose deaths continue to spike in Stark County Stark County has received both good news and bad news as we continue to struggle in this epic battle against the harrowing opioid epidemic. Overdose deaths in Ohio decreased 5% in 2022, but still remain at a staggering number of 4,915 lives, which follows the state record of 5,174 deaths the year before. Sadly, the number of overdose deaths in Stark County rose 11%, which exceeds the national increase of 1%. We lost 159 members of our community due to this deplorable crisis, leaving so many families heartbroken. If you or a loved one are suffering from addiction or substance abuse, please visit our website, relink.org, to find resources that can help you with this struggle.

May is National #TreatmentCourtMonth! Oklahoma County Treatment Courts are saving lives and reducing crime by offering evidence-based treatment and accountability to people with substance use and mental health disorders. When one person rises out of addiction and into recovery, health, and healing, we #AllRise. Oklahoma County Treatment Court is a post-plea, pre-sentence program for high-risk offenders with a moderate to severe substance use disorder. They accept a variety of criminal charges, excluding violent crimes and drug trafficking. The program takes a minimum of 18 months to complete – the active treatment phases (1-4) are designed to be completed in 12 months with Aftercare designed to be completed in 6 months. Special circumstances must be found for an individual to be allowed to remain in the program beyond 36 months. Since January 2016, they have graduated 1,464 people, saved $180,072,000 taxpayer dollars--and have CHANGED the trajectory for so many of our neighbors. Cheers to Melissa Walton, Madison Melon, Hon. Kenneth M. Stoner, Catherine “Catt” Burton, Christina Bolton, David Gilbert, Kelly Basey and so many others who make these programs such a success. 😍
