Read this before you pick your next project This is something beginners struggle a lot Taking unpaid work - as test of Ability in the process of becoming a copywriter I have done several such work where it is called as tests -Write a listicle on best schools in south Delhi -3000 words blogpost on our service and add a backlink to our website publish it on a medium -Write a YT short script on a fictional story -Write a Advertorial on our plant based product -A landing page description for my offer Well I did all of it in unpaid internships or free service. and you won't believe some of the organization are not even legit, they just want easy content. I am not saying it's all a waste as I learned a lot and sharpen my skills what I am asking - is it ethical to exploit people like this? Shouldn't beginners be nurtured, and mentored, if not paid atleast be appreciated for their hard work instead of being taken advantage of under the guise of a “test”? It’s time to change the norm and ask ourselves—are we really valuing talent, or just taking advantage of those who are eager to prove themselves? Hot take: Unpaid internships in video editing and content creation are a scam. I’ve always been against unpaid internships, especially in the content creation and video editing space. They don’t benefit you as much as companies claim they do—and they often take advantage of valuable skills you already have but don’t want to pay for. Why? ✅ "You’ll gain experience." If you’re editing videos or creating content for free, you’re already delivering value. That “experience” can be gained by working on your OWN projects or collaborating with other creators who want to grow alongside you. ✅ "You’ll get exposure and networking opportunities." Real networking happens when you connect with people who see your work and are willing to pay for it. Your portfolio is what matters most in this industry—not vague “credit” or unpaid work. ✅ "It will help you land a job later." But here’s the reality: Clients or companies only care about results and examples of what you can create for them. Unpaid internships often limit you to one niche, one style, and one company’s branding—which doesn’t always translate to other industries. 📊 The data backs this up. According to a NACE study, only 43% of unpaid interns received job offers post-internship compared to 72% of paid interns. Another report found unpaid internships often lead to over 30% lower starting salaries compared to peers who skipped unpaid roles entirely. Here’s my take: Unpaid internships in content creation are unnecessary. I never went to college, never took an unpaid role, and built a six-figure career from scratch—thanks to online resources, networking with people I found valuable, and working on projects that improved my skills. Maybe I’m missing something. If you genuinely found value in an unpaid internship in this space, I’d love to hear it.
