This weekend, Anna Sawai made history by becoming the first Asian actress to win the #Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for #Shōgun. This milestone, along with the growing visibility of Asian-owned businesses (looking at you Madewell), inspired me to look into Asian representation in #culture post-pandemic. Through #research, #sociallistening, and a focus group, I put together a mini trend digest on how brands can effectively embrace #AAPI#representation.

Did you see what happened at the Golden Globes on Sunday night? 🫣
So much to say, but I'll keep this one short.
🎬Lessons from the 2025 Golden Globes: Leadership and Linguistic Prosperity
The Golden Globes were packed with glitz, glamour, and yes—some brilliant lessons for leaders, especially those navigating English as a foreign language. Here are three standout moments that got me thinking about leadership from unique winners:
Demi Moore: Break Free from Labels
Demi Moore’s acceptance speech for *The Substance* was raw and inspiring. She spoke about how a director once dismissed her as a “popcorn actress” and how she had believed it for years. Her win proved she was more than the box others tried to put her in.
👉 Leadership Insight: As a non-native speaker, you might feel labeled or underestimated. But those labels don’t define you—your story, growth, and actions do. Own your narrative!

Jacques Audiard: Stayed True to himself (French Film Director of a Spanish language winning comedy-drama-musical)
When Jacques Audiard accepted his award for *Emilia Perez*, he spoke in French. Bold, right? But it worked. His message was so heartfelt, the language didn’t matter—his passion transcended words.
👉 Leadership Insight: Don’t let language insecurities hold you back. Speak authentically, even if it means leaning into your first language. People connect with your message, not your perfection.

Zoe Saldana: The Art of Multilingual Connection
Zoe Saldana sprinkled French phrases into her acceptance speech, weaving them seamlessly with her vibrant body language and emotional expressions. Her energy and multilingual approach captivated the room.
👉 Leadership Insight: Mixing languages can be a strength, not a weakness. Whether it’s adding a word from your native language or adjusting your tone and gestures, showing your linguistic diversity adds depth and connection.

On Linguistic Prosperity
These moments remind us that linguistic prosperity isn’t just about fluency or perfect grammar—it’s about using language (and beyond) to connect, inspire, and lead authentically.

“I believe that it will be valuable for Turkish cinema to address queer issues by using the power of documentary and collaborating with activist movements.” - (Metin Akdemir, 2020)
Scenes I Imagine is about the relationships between female characters in productions that were known as “women films” in Turkish cinema in the 1980s and early 90s. Could the deep bonds between women also point to relationships of a sexual and emotional nature that are hidden beneath the surface?

Last week, I posted about being able to perform consistent, convincing accents – it’s a part of my voice acting toolkit that I pride myself on, and mentally it allows me to justify that one night out in 2007 when I spent the entire evening annoying a Glaswegian friend by parroting her accent ‘in case I ever go into acting’.
But can you perform an accent convincingly if it was never real in the first place?!
I got a late-night audition last night checking if I could offer Transatlantic English – a contested subject among voice actors, but it’s generally identified as ‘that weird British-American mix from old-timey films’. Was it a high society thing? An actor thing? Did anyone actually talk like that outside of movies?! I’m not sure, but it’s hilarious and I love it, so I was keen to hone my skills.
I did have an existing Transatlantic tape, but it mentioned a brand name a lot, so I thought I’d record a more versatile sample. And since I need social media content, here’s me taking a leaf out of Johnny Neal’s book with a mashup of TWO iconic speeches! Really trying to carve out my amoral villain niche with these Harry Lime monologues from The Third Man.
To really get into character, I had to dress like Orson Wells too! Although I’m a bit worried that the outfit makes me look more like the kind of Internet-based Man that I aspire to avoid. Anyway, am I getting the Transatlantic accent right? Or do I sound ridiculous? And does that hat make me look like a Redditor?! I’d love to know what you think, and I promise I won’t use that as a jumping-off point to explain why you’re wrong.

NAVA, Queervox, the Disabled Voice Actors Database and Voices of color teamed up and worked on creating the Best Practices for Authentic Casting document!
This has been months in making, and I am so happy that this is out in the world now.
Authentic casting is important. Representation matters.
But there is some consideration that needs to be taken into account when it comes to these casting decisions. Please take a read, especially if you are someone who has a hand in casting 🤗 https://lnkd.in/gFxA9run#RepresentationMatters#Diversity#VoiceActor#Casting
Here are the 3 takeaways from the case of Karan Johar versus Indian Pride Advisory Pvt.Ltd:
1. It is important to understand the history behind the person's name and the status that the name holds in society. This helps to create strong personality rights for that person.
2. Don't use well-known names, together or in parts or in any manner for the subject film's promotion, endorsement, and publicity, directly or indirectly.
3. Never ignore your cease and desist notice, or your legal summons as it severely impacts your case negatively, making a leading factor to lose the case.
P.S: Personality Rights right is an individual right to protect their personality. Often used by celebrities, to protect their names and actions, to protect their right of publicity, and image from being commercially exploited.
