🛳🌬 #speed limits and #whales In the #USA there is a restriction on vessel speeds in areas where north Atlantic #rightwhales occur (at least for the #offshore #industry). It seems though, that these limits are ignored in far too many cases. Big vessels of all kinds can be tracked but smaller ones do as they please. On a normal terrestrial road, you have radars that track and fine you or a police car hidden behind a bush waiting for you. Why on earth this same rationale doesn't apply at sea? Did you know that one of the earliest recorded organized fire brigades was formed by the Roman Emperor Augustus? 🚒 In 24 BCE, he established the "Vigiles," a group of slaves and freedmen tasked with fighting fires in Rome. Not only were they equipped with buckets and axes, but they also had access to advanced firefighting gear for their time, such as water pumps. This early initiative by Augustus was revolutionary, laying the groundwork for modern firefighting and emergency response techniques. The Vigiles were a well-organized force, patrolling the streets at night to watch for fires and acting as an early form of urban police. They were stationed in watchtowers across the city, ready to spring into action at the first sign of fire, demonstrating an early understanding of the importance of quick response times in preventing widespread disaster. 💣✈ Plymouth - In the Blitz ✈💣 ⬇ ⬇ ⬇ So this week we are looking at Plymouth during the 🛩Blitz 🛩 which, like Portsmouth, was a major target 🎯due to it's docks and Naval base ⚓🚢. Throughout 1940, Plymouth was hit by bombing raids. Then in March and April 1941, Plymouth (and nearby Devonport) suffered a series of devastating raids resulting in over 900 deaths and 40,000 people lost their homes. The city lost its historic Guildhall🏛 and the main shopping streets were particularly badly hit. The photo from 1943 👇👇, from the Imperial War Museum records, shows the effects of the raids and some of the damage caused. It gives an idea of how the community had to set up stalls between the piles of rubble, which shoppers had to work their way round. Nature give us an example of #asymmetric #warfare where the attacker must evaluate risky strategies with high costs to themselves is the use of suicide bombings by insurgent groups against conventional military forces in conflict zones. In such scenarios, the attacker, typically a non-state actor, employs tactics that result in high casualties among both military personnel and civilians, often using improvised explosive devices (IEDs) or vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices (VBIEDs) to target military convoys, checkpoints, or civilian gatherings. This strategy poses significant risks and costs to the attacker, including the loss of operatives, resources, and potential backlash from the targeted population or international community. However, the goal is to inflict disproportionate damage and psychological impact on the adversary, undermining their morale and ability to maintain control over the territory. Despite the inherent risks and costs, suicide bombings have been used effectively by insurgent groups in conflicts such as #Somalia and the ongoing conflict in #Sahel, where they have contributed to destabilizing conventional military operations and shaping the political narrative in favor of the insurgents.

For some wildlife, disturbances caused by military training activities are actually key to survival. The rare eastern regal fritillary butterfly is found only at Fort Indiantown Gap in Pennsylvania, which is home to one of the largest expanses of native warm-season grasslands in the Northeastern U.S. This habitat requires periodic disturbance, at the right time and intensity, to keep the butterfly going strong. https://ow.ly/vO6u50R9xR7

To the members of the occupation responsible for these reprehensible acts: you are not just perpetrators of cruelty, but architects of suffering and injustice. You are complicit in the perpetuation of a brutal regime that thrives on oppression and violence. We demand accountability, justice, and an end to the occupation that enables and perpetuates such monstrous behavior.
