New Guidelines on Protected Areas:"Designing and managing protected and conserved areas to support inland water ecosystems and biodiversity"
Inland waters don't get the attention they deserve and freshwater biodiversity is suffering huge losses in consequence. New guidance from the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas focuses on planning and managing protected and conserved areas for inland waters and should help anyone working on their conservation. Thanks are due to The Nature Conservancy for sponsoring. Wetland Partnerships can be a means for the EU and its member states to support the implementation of the Freshwater Challenge and alignment of global conventions at the national level, while delivering results for #wetlands.
We will be at #ClimateWeekNYC, raising the profile of The Freshwater Challenge, the largest global initiative to restore and protect rivers and wetlands. Water is one of the hardest hit natural resources of #climatechange and wetlands provide nearly all of the world's freshwater. Healthy wetlands are a premium #naturebasedsolution. What we need is action. #WeNeedWetlands WWF The Nature Conservancy IUCN BirdLife International Convention on Wetlands

Celebrating #WorldWetlandsDay! At SADC-GMI, we reflect on the profound connection between wetlands and human well-being. These vital ecosystems, often overlooked, act as nature's purifiers, playing a crucial role in ensuring clean water and fostering rich biodiversity. In our region, Southern Africa, nearly 25% of wetlands have faced significant degradation, impacting the delicate balance of our ecosystems. This World Wetlands Day, let's unite for conservation. Governments, businesses, and individuals all play a crucial role in supporting policies, restoration projects, and sustainable practices to safeguard these invaluable ecosystems. Wetlands are not just nature's treasures; they are an investment in our future. At SADC-GMI, our commitment to sustainable groundwater management goes hand in hand with the preservation of these vital wetlands. Join us in taking collective action for a harmonious balance between nature and human existence.

On today’s #IndigenousPeoplesDay, we recognize the invaluable contributions of Indigenous Peoples to coral reef conservation. 💙 For traditional communities, coral reefs are the source of their families’ livelihoods, well-being, and the foundation of their cultural identities. #IndigenousPeoples must be involved in decision-making and benefit-sharing. This is a matter of survival for all vulnerable communities. Traditional practices are essential to reinforce local cooperation and youth leadership. Traditional wisdom, combined with modern science, can be integrated into community-based management frameworks to support Marine Protected Areas and promote Indigenous peoples-led initiatives. Indigenous communities have been protecting our planet’s biodiversity for generations. Recognizing their knowledge is essential on our way to a more sustainable future. “When the blood in your veins returns to the sea, and the earth in your bones returns to the ground, perhaps then you will remember that this land does not belong to you. It is you who belong to this land.” Celebrating Indigenous wisdom and ocean stewardship today and every day. #IndigenousPeoplesDay 📷: Erik Lukas / Ocean Image Bank

In a bid to renew and protect the coral reefs around Mauritius, Beachcomber is proud to launch a new coral restoration and preservation project at Le Morne. Together with the European Union and the NGO Reef Conservation, Beachcomber aims to achieve four objectives: establish a coral inventory, create a sanctuary for these marine organisms, develop an educational centre, and create Voluntary Marine Conservation Zones. There will be three phases to this five-year plan. The first involves creating a comprehensive coral inventory. Phase 2 will include the creation of a coral nursery at Paradis Beachcomber to cultivate the rare corals before placing them on the natural reefs of the island. Thirdly, Beachcomber will incorporate an educational centre at Paradis Beachcomber to raise awareness. All of us are acutely aware of the role coral reefs play in the marine ecosystem. Protecting and renewing the coral reefs around Mauritius is part of Beachcomber’s 52 commitments to sustainability. We’ll keep you updated as the project progresses
