The reliability team at Roy Hill iron ore mine was snowed under with piping maintenance. Until they did this... Back in 2020, the team was constantly bandaging the ceramic-lined piping in the spiral feeds. It was frustrating and time-consuming to keep it limping through to the six-month shuts. On tight bends – like ones in spiral feeds – you need piping that can handle high velocity, abrasive slurry. That’s why they decided to change to ceramic-lined mining hose bends. Is vibration breaking your plant into pieces? Read on for a fix👇 - This picture is from a typical ball mill pump discharge. The previous arrangement at this Gold mine was a fully rigid piping set up. Vibration was transmitting throughout the structure, breaking bolts anchoring the pump motor and cracking grouting in concrete holding the pump base. Based on many similar scenarios we recommended introducing Slurryflex mining hose to dampen the vibration. Nearly all of the mines I work with now use Slurryflex hose as it absorbs vibration, and the flexibility allows for some movement. This reduces stresses to piping, structure, bolts and connections. This is resulting in a safer workplace, less maintenance and a reduction in expensive failures in supports. Here's why the Roy Hill engineering team have stopped using rubber lined steel elbows in their desands plant. - In 2021, the team was looking for alternatives to rubber-lined steel elbows after years of frustration from misaligned, fast-wearing piping. They wanted pipework that would last longer and could withstand the coarse, highly turbulent iron ore slurry. We suggested ceramic-lined mining hose for this purpose. It offers strong abrasion resistance combined with the impact absorption and dispersion benefits of mining hose. The team decided on pre-formed Slurryflex CLX bends with tiles embedded 360° in the pipe. This is an excellent option for turbulent slurry applications because it provides wear resistance through the entire hose. Three years on, the hoses are still in place and going strong. That’s three years of no leaks, bandaging or lost production time. Stop making work for you and your team.
