When deciding on a heavy commercial vehicle purchase, the first step is to ensure it is right for its intended application: First determine the payload you are going to transport and choose a vehicle with sufficient capacity to legally carry the payload. This will also ensure you maximise your productivity. Choose an engine size that fits the job the vehicle needs to do. A vehicle with more power than is necessary will use a lot of fuel. Fuel is a variable cost so maximising your fuel efficiency will go a long way to maximising your profitability. The best way to determine the power to torque rating you need is to ask our sales team for a tailor-made performance calculation. If you’ll be operating in rough conditions, check the vehicle’s chassis strength and ensure it is strong enough to withstand working in tough conditions. If you’ll be working in a hilly environment, make sure your vehicle is equipped with a world-class retarder. The Scania Retarder reduces wear and tear on the braking system. It boosts safety by keeping the service brakes cold for full emergency performance when a driver needs it most. Make sure the vehicle you buy is equipped with the correct suspension for your needs. Suspensions designed for highway operations will be expensive to maintain if used on dirt roads. #Scaniatrucks #Tailoredforthejob #ScaniaSA

The Vert-A-Pac was an innovative transportation solution developed in the 1970s by General Motors (GM) and Southern Pacific Railroad to reduce the shipping costs of the Chevrolet Vega, a subcompact car that GM aimed to keep budget-friendly with a price tag around $2,000. Here's a detailed look at how this system worked and the engineering adaptations that made it possible: - The Vert-A-Pac System **Design and Implementation:** - The Vert-A-Pac allowed 30 Vegas to be transported in a single railcar, significantly more than the traditional 18 cars per boxcar. - This vertical shipping method involved loading the cars nose-down, standing on their front bumpers. - The system utilized specialized railcars with side panels that could be opened to load and unload the vehicles vertically. - Engineering Adaptations To accommodate this unique shipping method, GM engineers had to make several modifications to the Vega's design: 1. **Oil Baffles:** - Specific oil baffles were designed to prevent oil from spilling while the car was in the vertical position. 2. **Carburetors:** - Specially designed carburetors ensured that fuel wouldn't leak when the cars were stood on end. 3. **Batteries:** - The batteries were modified to prevent acid from leaking. 4. **Powertrain and Chassis:** - Plastic spacers were added between the powertrain and the chassis to prevent damage during shipping. - Impact on Freight Costs - By increasing the number of cars transported per railcar from 18 to 30, the Vert-A-Pac system lowered freight costs by up to 40%. - This significant reduction in shipping costs contributed to keeping the Vega's price competitive in the budget car market. The Vert-A-Pac system was a remarkable example of engineering innovation driven by the need to reduce costs and improve efficiency. By collaborating with Southern Pacific Railroad, GM was able to implement a cost-effective solution that allowed more vehicles to be shipped per railcar. The specific engineering adaptations made to the Vega ensured that the cars could withstand the unique conditions of vertical transportation without damage, maintaining their integrity and performance upon arrival. #chevrolet #transport #logistics #chevy #chevyvega #automotive #autoindustry #dealership
