Ports Victoria masters three navigational challenges in a week, including the safe transit of two of the biggest vessels to ever visit Swanson Dock. It’s been quite the week for the team at Ports Victoria who have successfully mastered not one – but three – navigational challenges around Melbourne’s port waters. All three of these projects required careful risk assessment and potential mitigation, detailed planning to ensure strict risk controls and extensive stakeholder engagement and the positive handling of each situation showed yet again how Ports Victoria continues to rise to the challenges of dealing with larger and more complex vessels visiting Victorian waters. First, we welcomed and successfully farewelled the record-breaking CMA CGM Volga, which has a capacity of 10,622 TEU (Twenty-foot container unit) making it the largest capacity vessel that has ever transited the Yarra River into Swanson dock. Next came the carefully managed transit of Seaspan Breeze, another record-breaker which is the largest vessel ever to head into Swanson Dock, boasting the impressive statistics of being a daunting 337 meters in length and 48.2 meters in width. And our third challenge was the delivery of the drill rig Valaris 107, which arrived onboard the GPO Amethyst, before being floated off and successfully towed out into Bass Strait by ENA Samurai and MMA Coral. (The heavy-duty modern jack up rig Valaris 107 has been contracted by Esso Australia to undertake decommissioning activities across their foreshore operations in the Gippsland Basin.) Ports Victoria CEO Craig Walker said each of these transits presented distinct challenges and he paid tribute to the Ports Victoria Harbour Master team, the Vessel Traffic Service Officers and the on-water 'Keep Clear' patrol team. He also paid tribute to the positive collaboration of the external teams who worked together on each of these challenges including Port of Melbourne, Port Phillip Sea Pilots Pty Ltd, Svitzer Australia, Ocean Network Express, CMA CGM, Patrick Terminals, ANL and other key stakeholders. “We are dedicated to supporting safe, efficient and innovative maritime logistics for the state of Victoria,” he said. “And continuing to successfully manage challenges such as these should demonstrate to all Victorians that their ports are in good hands!” #maritimesafety #workplaceachievement #teamwork

📣Riviera Maritime Media Ltd: ''AXSMarine Research data indicates the active shuttle tanker fleet currently numbers 121 vessels, with an orderbook-to-fleet ratio approaching 10%. Most vessels in operation are between five and 14 years old, accounting for 44% of the fleet. Modern vessels, up to four years old, make up 27%, while older vessels over 15 years represent 29%. This composition suggests significant potential for fleet growth and renewal. The largest global player remains Knutsen NYK Offshore Tankers (KNOT), a joint venture formed in 2010 between Norway’s Knutsen and Japan’s Nippon Yusen Kaisha. KNOT operates 25 shuttle tankers and has four more on order, according to AXSMarine Research.'' 💡 Check out Riviera's full analysis below. 👇
According to AXSMarine data shared with Riviera, Greek owners controlled 23% of the global shuttle tanker fleet as of November 2024. Furthermore, they are behind seven of the 12 vessels currently under construction, accounting for 58% of the total orderbook.
