I often talk about the idea that some crisis communications management situations are planned for but never seen. I recently managed a crisis in which you literally could not see. For one of my client's, the power was out when people arrived on site. It affected several thousand stakeholders. We quickly drafted messages in the event that the power came back quickly, or in case it didn't come back at all that day. The power came back on about 30 minutes after we sent the initial message. But we were prepared with alternative messages if it didn't. Preparing for a number of different scenarios is a hallmark of crisis communications. My job as a crisis communications consultant is to anticipate what might happen even if you can't see it or never see it, literally and figuratively. Being prepared for different outcomes is good planning. I know very little about crisis communications, so it’s interesting to get a little window into it.
You're working toward making the crisis less so, or not a crisis at all. In that way, the preparation can indeed avoid the crisis. Very smart!
And that seems to be the goal... Handle the crisis so it is invisible.
How often did you had to improvise on the spot Joanna Brody, M.A.? Always imagined that you just can't cover 100% of possible crisis scenarios. Or is it possible?
So interesting and stressful! I'm working on new educational content this week and it is fun and exciting!
I find your job so interesting, Joanna How do you keep calm and collected when there is a crisis and you need to execute, especially taking care of all the different scenarios? Have you learned it mostly from experience?

I love that thought - if it's done well, it's not seen! Makes total sense Joanna!
I guess when your job is done well, you are invisible, Joanna Brody, M.A.! I never really thought about that, but it makes sense!
It's good to be prepare and be aware for what may or may not comes down the pipes. Some times playing out worst case scenario is helpful knowing ok we got this.
