Series 3/17: The Concept of Servitization in Data Monetization Servitization refers to the shift from selling standalone products to offering integrated products and services that deliver greater value. First introduced in 1988, the concept aimed to help manufacturers differentiate themselves from competitors by providing complementary services, such as maintenance, alongside their products. Servitization is grounded in Service-Dominant (SD) Logic, an academic theory that shifts focus from tangible resources with embedded value to intangible resources, co-creation of value, and relationships. SD logic emphasizes the economic exchange of competencies—skills, knowledge, and processes—where one actor applies their capabilities for the benefit of another. In the context of data monetization, SD logic applies through the use of data-related skills, knowledge, and processes to generate value for data consumers. The benefits can be tangible, such as data products, or intangible, like insights derived from data or the utility gained from data-driven solutions. There are three key elements of SD logic that help conceptualize Data Monetization as a Service (DMaaS): 1. Service Ecosystem: A network of participants, including data consumers, providers, and enrichers, that interact within the data ecosystem. 2. Service Platform: The digital infrastructure—a modular structure of resources—that facilitates interactions and exchanges within the ecosystem, such as data marketplaces. 3. Value Co-Creation: The processes and activities that integrate resources, where different participants play roles in co-creating value, such as packaging and delivering data insights. However, as the platform matures, it's crucial to shift attention to the ongoing usage of datasets and tables within the system. Over time, datasets that were once heavily utilized may become less relevant due to changes in business needs or upstream systems. These shifts can render certain datasets obsolete, yet they may still consume resources and complicate the platform's maintenance. This is where a data usage tracking system becomes invaluable. By monitoring usage metrics, you can identify datasets that have not been accessed or utilized for a specific period, such as 180 days. Rather than relying on the traditional approach of manually reaching out to every data consumer—a process that often results in a default response of "yes" when asked if the data is still needed—a data-driven approach enables more efficient decision-making. If a dataset shows no usage over the predefined period, automated notifications can be sent to stakeholders, indicating that the data will be decommissioned unless there is a justified need for its retention. This approach not only reduces the maintenance burden and costs associated with keeping outdated datasets but also allows engineers to focus on more critical tasks, thereby enhancing the overall efficiency and scalability of the data platform. #dataengineering #dataplatforms #data

In #ApacheKafka_4.0, the Shared Group feature is a new improvement to the consumer group functionality. It allows multiple consumers from the same group to share the consumption of the same partition(s). This is useful in scenarios where you want parallel consumption of the same data within a single consumer group, which was not possible with earlier versions.
