The Lesson Drawn from Mooncakes
Last week it was the Mid-Autumn Festival smacked in the middle of Sept.
Long before the festivities, boxes of mooncakes were on sale.
My favourite mooncake is the traditional one with lotus paste and egg yolks.
Each year, it is a tradition for my family and many other Chinese families to enjoy the delights.
For children, the carrying of lanterns adds to the festive joy.
This year, due to a busy schedule, it slipped my mind to get those delicious cakes ahead of time.
Lo and behold, when the day came, my kitchen was devoid of mooncakes.
Dismay set in.
Two mooncakes arrived as small gifts from my daughter.
That saved the day.
Otherwise, we would have to wait another year to taste the sweet treats.
Thus, the rationing began with small slices carefully cut.
In life and at work, we may leave things to manage at a later stage.
What is the rationale behind it?
That we would have the time to do so later?
Is the delay alright since we can get around another time?
Is it unimportant to warrant any urgency?
Once that window of opportunity is gone, the game may be over.
Instead of leaving it to chance, having it in our plans can make that difference.
Therein lies intentionality.
Making a concerted effort to reach that goal is more likely to see it through.
Are there areas in your life or work where it is a drag to do?
Or worse, areas that have been purposely ruled out of sight.
If these areas are irrelevant in the first place, should they even be on your radar?
Are they meaningful enough?
If so, should they be relegated to the bottom of your makeshift pile?
Identify the important issues to tackle.
Have purpose-driven steps to achieve them.
What may seemingly look trivial and neglected can have consequences.
Can you live with those consequences?
Why work on a Plan B when Plan A could have been executed easily?
Back to the mooncakes.
As a creative consultant, I could not resist styling and shooting those prized mooncakes as a reminder of my family almost missing out on them.
Believe me, we savoured every bite of those gifted mooncakes.
Yum.
