Unemployment is hard. Allowing candidates to go through 5 rounds of interviews and tests is a recipe to frustrate well-meaning candidates. Keep the recruitment process simple yet effective. 1. Qualify based on CV/resume. 2. Shortlist candidates who meet the basic requirements. 3. Give a simple test they can complete within a few hours depending on the role you are hiring for (this is essential if you are hiring developers). 4. Shortlist candidates based on the test results. 5. Interview the top 3-5 candidates to discuss work culture, expectations, and ask behavioural questions to know the best fit for the job. 6. ➡ Time to Address the Failures of Recruitment! ⬅ I recently ran an experiment to highlight the gaps in recruitment practices. I registered on various local and international job boards, identified exceptional candidates outside of titc's niche, and sent their perfectly crafted CVs and cover letters to hiring managers and recruiters. My emails clearly stated that I didn't want a referral or agency fee—just that these candidates are exceptional in their field. ❗ What happened next? ❗ 1) On job ads, I encountered the all-too-familiar line: "If you don't hear from us in two weeks, consider your application unsuccessful." This catch-all phrase is used by both internal and agency recruiters to sidestep providing candidates with meaningful feedback. 3) Salary information remained a guarded secret, as if, as the candidate, I had no right to assign value to myself or my experience, but that it would be decided for me. Didn't realise I was a product to be bought and haggled... 2) As for my CV referrals...Not a single acknowledgement. No "stop mailing me," no "go away," nothing. Just silence. Now, if I, with over 12 years of recruitment and HR experience, a Director and COO of a growth agency, and COO of a well-recognised NPO in Africa, cannot navigate job ads, decide my own professional value, or can be ignored and treated as though I don't matter, imagine how every single candidate feels right now... The bottom line is this: Recruitment should not be about ticking boxes and chasing profits at the expense of human dignity. Candidates are not just numbers; they are individuals with dreams, families, and futures that hinge on job opportunities. It's time we actually care - and not just say we care.
