Is the Great Migration on your bucket list? Read on for tips on where and when to go…. The Great Migration is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and is the annual journey of over 2 million wildebeest, plus smaller numbers of zebra, Grant’s gazelle, Thomson’s gazelle, eland and impala, in search of grazing and water. Moving in large loop, the route is mainly in the Serengeti in Tanzania with a short period in the north in the Masia Mara in Kenya. July to November is considered to be the best time to go, due to the location being the most accessible and sought after, due to the dramatic Mara River crossing. However, if seeing the jittery wildebeest making the perilous journey doesn’t appeal then visiting a little later in the season in October when there are less tourists may suit you better. Here is a brief summary of where the migration is throughout the key months: 🐊 June -July: the dry season starts with large numbers of animals in the Western Serengeti in Tanzania on the banks of the Grumeti River. They then head north towards the Mara River in the north of the Serengeti. The river crossing here is the most treacherous as the wildebeest try to dodge the snapping crocodiles on the river or the prowling big cats on the banks. 🦓 Aug – Oct: after they have crossed the Mara River, they move towards Kenya’s Masai Mara’s northern region with many remaining in north Serengeti. By the end of this period, they face the Mara River once again as they prepare to cross once again and head southbound. 🐆 Nov-Dec: moving south from Kenya, they move to the eastern limits of the Serengeti to an area known for outstanding cheetah sightings. By the end of the year, they are spread out through the east and the south. For a truly exclusive experience, I recommend a temporary camp with only 6 tents that moves between three prime locations throughout the season. 📧 For more information on safari itineraries in Tanzania and Kenya, DM me or message me at jo.briody@travelcounsellors.com. #africansafari #safari #africasafariexpert #trustedtravel
