Big News for NAIT Spruce GroveCampus: Federal Funding Boosts 🚀 Yesterday we were able to attend the NAIT (Northern Alberta Institute of Technology) news conference (if you look closely 🔎 at the news article image, you can see Mayor Acker, Dave and I). Minister Randy Boissonnault announced that the federal government, through the Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) program, has provided significant funding to NAIT for the acquisition of new equipment, including a brand-new 70-metric-ton telescopic mobile crane at the Spruce Grove Campus. This equipment will support NAIT's apprenticeship programs in construction, machining, automotive, and transportation, ensuring that students are trained with the latest technology to meet industry demands. The announcement event was attended by several distinguished guests, including 🇨🇦Minister Randy Boissonnault, 🎓NAIT President and CEO, Laura Jo Gunter , 🏛Spruce Grove Mayor Jeff Acker , NAIT Board Directors, 👷♂️President and CEO of CAREERS: The Next Generation Andy Neigel ,🏗 Dean of the School of Construction and Building Science Matthew L. , and 🚚 Dean of Transportation, Manufacturing, and Automation Stephen McMillan. 👉As Minister Boissonnault emphasized, "A piece of machinery like this is not just for Alberta or Edmonton students. To have any hope of delivering the quantity of new homes desperately needed in Queensland to address not only the current housing shortage but demand into the future, we need all sectors of the home building industry to be firing. The negative impact of the former government’s BPICs policy on the ability of the industry to deliver high rise residential towers has been dramatic. This is why HIA lobbied for a curbing or abolition of BPICs in our published election priorities in the lead up to the election. If we want to build more homes in Queensland quickly, and especially more unit towers, productivity within the industry must improve. The announcement today by the Deputy Premier, that will see an immediate pause to the industrial relations provisions of the BPICs, while preserving WH&S, and apprenticeships and training systems is very welcome.

A critical sector contributing over 10% of the nation's GDP is facing "a perfect storm of challenges" We're dealing with a triple threat - The exodus of tradies, stretched supply chains and labor shortages. Baby Boomer builders are retiring, and there is pretty much no replacement. Younger generations are discouraged and are leaving due to tough working conditions. And this lack of replacements is compounded by a significant drop in apprenticeships. According to Scott, 50,000 apprentices have left the program so fat in one year. A shortfall that could cripple the industry's ability to meet the government's ambitious target of building 1.2 million homes in five years. This lack of replacements is compounded by a significant drop in apprenticeships. We need to acknowledge the gravity of the situation. Urgent action is needed to address the skilled labor gap. However you look at it, we need a culture change. We need to make careers in the trades more attractive. We need to encourage more Australians to enter or return to the trades. It is clear from discussions with a number of providers that Ofsted is making relevant changes in an attempt to reduce the stressful impact and disproportionate workload attached to a visit. However, it is hard to see how effectively that can be achieved when the stakes attached to an inspection outcome are so high. Obviously we want appropriate oversight for the industry, but the challenge is to make it authentic and constructive. I spoke to a provider this week who has made significant improvements in a short space of time, but failed to impress Ofsted because sufficient impact has not yet been seen. For me it's all about the direction of travel - if the provision is moving in a positive direction, this needs to be supported and encouraged. Plus of course, in an ideal world, we all exemplify Ofsted values throughout all we do, so an inspection should constitute no threat at all! In the actual world, with constant additional staffing, budgeting and timetabling challenges, there is much to juggle around an inspection. Communication across the sector and sharing of experiences can only help - I have welcomed these discussions across my apprenticeship provider network. #ofsted #inspectionpreparation #sharinggoodpractice

All levels of government should start to urgently invest more into job-specific second language training and credential recognition programs to help hire and retain immigrant talent in these highly in-demand industries. The time to act is NOW.

Based on this type of demand, stability and opportunity will be the order of the day for those choosing to enter the trade side of construction, over the coming decade.
