House Intelligence Committee FISA “Reform” Bill To Greatly Expand the Class of Businesses and Other Entities Required to Assist in FISA 702 Surveillance
A surveillance state operates best by widening the number of people who are compelled to report on others.
These changes would vastly widen the scope of businesses, entities, and their affiliates who are eligible to be compelled to assist 702 surveillance. By including any “service provider”—rather than any “other communication service provider”—that has access not just to communications, but also to the “equipment that is being or may be used to transmit or store . . . communications,” the expanded definition would appear to cover data centers, colocation providers, business landlords, shared workspaces, or even hotels where guests connect to the Internet. And the addition of the term “custodian” in (4) above could be understood to sweep in any third party involved in providing equipment, storage, or even cleaning services to such entities."
I remember I met a man in 2010, who said to me, that Australia had the exact same conditions as Germany before WW2 and when I asked him why, I was surprised by his answer.
He said, it was all the reporting by ordinary people. That he was visited by the council because a complaint was made that he had 3 dogs and that was against the rules, but he had none. Neighbour set against each other.
Reminds me of how the Victorian government had people report on each other during the pandemic. Now it's written into law in the US. 🙈😳
Let's hope people just ignore such intrusions.
