UNCW Assistant Professor of Biology and Marine Biology Matthew McLean and Ph.D. student Adrian Gonzalez-Ortiz have received a $400,000 NSF EMBRACE grant. Their project, "The Dynamics and Drivers of Fish-Mediated Ecosystem Functions in European Seas," will explore the role of fish assemblages in nutrient cycles like nitrogen and phosphorus, assessing impacts from climate change and fishing pressures. Their research includes two North Sea expeditions in 2025, supplemented by lab work at UNCW over the next four years. This grant is a milestone for McLean, who joined UNCW in 2023 with a vision to advance marine research and mentor passionate students.

#Bachelors student Tuva Elingstam has been busy working with Luis Gonzalez Guerrero, Maria João Mendes & myself at Umeå Marine Sciences Centre (#UMF) over the past few weeks investigating photoacclimation in #Arctic seaweed (#Fucus) for her final year thesis. It is expected that the coastal underwater light environment will change a lot in the coming decades - becoming darker (#CoastalDarkening) and changing colour (#brownification). As biodiversity hotspots, understanding how habitat-forming seaweeds such as these will respond to future light environments is crucial for predicting ecosystem change. Eco tiles have been designed and researched in the past decade in relation to massively increasing local marine biodiversity in areas of artificial coastlines 🦀 These tiles are places on otherwise flat sea walls, such as along erosion defences and harbours, which enhance and promote the recruitment of species by x2 🪱! The small crevices act as micro habitat for fauna, allowing for a biodiverse ecosystem to grow on the tiles by providing shelter and cooler temperatures 🌊 Some studies have even found an increase of animals by 450% on an otherwise flat surface, including invertebrates, algae, and juvenile fish 🐟 The increased abundance of invertebrates including molluscs such as Mussels have also been found to improve water quality in the local area 🦪 I first heard about these eco tiles through research at my university, and since then I like having a look around harbours to see if there have been eco tiles implemented. It’s great to see how small changes in just the surface of sea defence infrastructure can have large positive impact to the marine life around these spaces! #marinebiology #marinescience
