We are proud to sponsor the Student Social Networking Night at the 2024 joint Australian Marine Sciences Association (AMSA) and New Zealand Marine Sciences Society (NZMSS) conference. The event brings together marine scientists and managers from Australia, New Zealand, and the Indo-Pacific under the theme ‘Navigating Uncertainty for a Future Sustainable Ocean’. As part of the conference, the Student Social Networking Night provides the opportunity for students and potential mentors to connect and network in an informal setting. By helping students build their networks, we are investing in the future of marine conservation. https://lnkd.in/ghHDrqjY #MarineScience #AMSA #Philanthrophy #PostGrad #Networking

Submit your abstract for The AMSA & NZMSS 2024 Conference symposia before 15/March/2024. Advancements in Monitoring, Modelling, and Forecasting Water Quality for Sustainable Estuarine and Coastal Ecosystems Convenors: Nagur Cherukuru (CSIRO) , Tim Ingleton (NSW Department of Planning and Environmen), Mark Doubell (South Australian Research and Development Institute) Estuarine and coastal aquatic ecosystems worldwide face a significant challenge of water quality degradation, driven by both natural processes and anthropogenic influences. This degradation adversely affects crucial aspects such as aquatic biogeochemistry, underwater light availability, water column productivity, and benthic habitats. The consequences of declining water quality extend to disruptions in the functioning of aquatic ecosystems, ultimately leading to socio-economic losses for human populations reliant on these resources. Consequently, there is an urgent need to employ comprehensive monitoring, modelling, and forecasting strategies to develop sustainable management approaches for estuarine and coastal ecosystems. This symposium aims to unite experts, researchers, and practitioners specializing in estuarine and coastal water quality. The event seeks to facilitate discussions on the latest advancements in monitoring, modelling, and forecasting techniques, providing a platform for sharing cutting-edge research, innovative methodologies, and successful case studies. Key topics to be addressed include progress in sensor networks, remote sensing applications, ecosystem modelling, machine learning models, and integrated monitoring and forecasting approaches. Abstract submissions and active participation are encouraged in this symposium dedicated to advancing the science and application of monitoring, modelling, and forecasting, with a specific focus on sustainable management of estuarine and coastal water quality. #AMSA2024 #AquawatchAustralia #remotesensing #insitusensing #forecasting #waterquality https://lnkd.in/gkN8Esv2

We arrived in the House of Grímur in #Ísafjörður, where Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, Iceland’s President 1996-2016, grew up. In 2008, I met him at a reception during a summer school on small states at University of Iceland (Háskóli Íslands). One of the strategies we discussed during the summer school was that #smallstates could expand their influence in #internationalpolitics by being “smart”. This means to find niches in which these countries could lead. Arctic Circle, a platform on #Arctic collaboration that is chaired by Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson and that supports our #Grimsson fellowship, is a good example for this. It gives #Iceland a leading role in the region and involves a diverse set of actors. In our fellowship, Elisa Debora Hofmann and I explore the role of one of these actors – science – in relation to environmental changes in the Arctic through arts and research.

Ocean Connection on a deeper level...
What's your marine identity? New research suggests that people’s deep connection with the ocean – their “marine identity” – can help us reset society’s relationship with the seas. Led by Dr. Pamela Buchan from ExeterMarine at the University of Exeter with a diverse, international group of marine researchers and practitioners, this research defines marine identity as: “An identity rooted in how the ocean as a place supports the sense of self.” This is the first time that an international, cross-cultural definition of marine identity has been agreed upon. This research is the culmination of a project that was endorsed as an #OceanDecade Activity and by the EU Mission Ocean and is a key contribution to Decade Challenge 10, which aims to restore society's relationship with the ocean. After a week at the 2024 #OceanDecade Conference, this is what Hub researcher and Empatheatre co-founder Dylan McGarry (Rhodes University, South Africa) concludes: "#OceanLiteracy can easily become scientific propaganda if it’s not tempered with ocean humanities and other ways of knowing and being and doing. There are many Ocean Fluent people; from small-scale fishers, to Indigenous healers, surfers, swimmers and children... We don’t need literacy in the sense that the west has described it, we need support and affirmation of existing ocean fluent people to govern and manage their own places. The #UN says “societal behaviour change” is needed. We must rather articulate the specific aspects of society that are threatening the ocean. It’s not an amorphous or monotonal threat - it is specific people, specific groups and specific industries." See a clip of Dylan's presentation from the Hub's event ⬇ During his presentation, Dylan refers to a five-minute film that explores an aspect of intangible ocean heritage and involved the participation of Indigenous knowledge holders from #SouthAfrica. 🎞 Watch the film 'Indlela Yokuphila: The Soul's Journey': https://lnkd.in/eRGMxHKQ #OceanDecade2024 #OceanDecade #OurOcean #OceanJustice UN Ocean Decade UNESCO Ocean

Our MarineSABRES colleagues Gemma Smith & Mike Elliott of IECS (International Estuarine and Coastal Specialists Ltd) recently participated in the 60th meeting of the Estuarine & Coastal Sciences Association to explore an urgent question: ‘How can we better protect our coasts & oceans while balancing human needs?’ As part of this event, Gemma and Mike discussed how the Marine SABRES project was developing a user-friendly tool called a "Simple Social-Ecological System" (Simple SES) to make marine ecosystem-based management clearer and more effective. You can read their reflections from the event below! 🔗 https://bit.ly/40gwL1O ✨ Unsure what a Simple SES is?
